Lil Pump, Butterfly Doors [Photo Credit: Warner Bros.]Teen rapper Lil Pump continues to fall short on his latest, utterly forgettable single, “Butterfly Doors.” No transcendence to be found whatsoever.

There’s no sugarcoating the mediocrity that is Lil Pump.  The teen rapper has had his share of moments – mostly “Gucci Gang” – but he’s also dropped some downright, straight-up duds.  Returning with another short single, “Butterfly Doors,” Pump continues on a brainless, utterly meaningless run.

There are some pros regarding “Butterfly Doors.”  First and foremost, as aforementioned, it’s brief – it doesn’t even approach the two-and-a-half-minute mark.  Another “W” for Lil Pump is the minor-key, minimalist production work.  Pump works with a sleek beat and a sketchy, seedy-sounding synth.  Adding to the pros is his flow, which is appealing overall.  But there’s a difference between the flow itself, and the bars he’s spitting.  As agile and quick-paced as the rhymes are, those rhymes are basic AF – nothing transcendent to be found.  He references. hustling, guns, money, Lamborghini, etc. Making things even worse is Pump gets controversial, thanks to a tasteless reference to Asians on the chorus: “They call me Yao [Ming] ‘cause my eyes real low.”  WTF was he thinking?

Final Thoughts

Really, there’s not much to say after listening to “Butterfly Doors.” Personally, I said, “So what?” This is another basic, forgettable number from Lil Pump.  This lacks the charm and memorability of “Gucci Gang,” and it just seems as if the teen rapper has nothing worthwhile to rap about.  Longevity will fall by the wayside if he doesn’t start producing something of substance. “Butterfly Doors” is NOT it.
