Leon Bridges, Good Thing © ColumbiaFollowing a fine debut album in 2015 (‘Coming Home’), Leon Bridges returns in 2018 with two new singles, including gorgeous retro-soul ballad, “Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand.”

“Sometimes the bet isn’t worth the hand.” The talented retro-soul artist Leon Bridges returns after a three-year hiatus.  Back in 2015, Bridges compelled with his old-school approach on an underrated debut album, Coming Home.  Highlights from the effort include the title track and “Lisa Sawyer.” Upon announcing his sophomore album Good Thing (May 4, 2018), he dropped two new singles, “Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand” and “Bad Bad News.”

Soul enthusiasts will feel like they returned to their heyday listening to “Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand.” The old-school shtick is alive, with harp arpeggios, glockenspiel, strings, and an overall lush backdrop.  Safe to say, the production is perfect fuel for Bridges’ fire, whether he needed the extra spark or not.  Bridges sounds much more confident and mature on “Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand.”  The falsetto is formidable, while chest voice is incredibly commanding and emotional.  Adding to the jubilance is the solid songwriting with an undeniably prudent message.  Short and sweet, “Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand” just crosses the three-minute mark.

Final Thoughts

Leon Bridges returns in top-notch form on “Bet Ain’t Worth the Hand.”  His vocals are better than ever, while the production is nothing short of awesome.  The old-school vibes are real.  Sure, old-school may be too old for younger audiences, but for all the old souls out there, Bridges provides the right music for the right time.
