It only takes ONE hit to solidify a musical legacy ๐Ÿ’ฏ! On 1 Hit WONDERful ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘, we highlight songs that were the SOLE hit by a given musician.ย  To be fair, it is possible that the artists appearing on this list earned a minor hit or two, BUT for the most part, itโ€™s that ONE hit that earned them recognition. So, in the 12th edition of 1 Hit WONDERful ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘, we dive into ๐ŸŽต โ€œOne in a Million Youโ€, ย the one hit wonder by ๐ŸŽ™ Larry Graham.

Larry Graham, One in a Million You [๐Ÿ“ท: Warner]โ€œBut one day, the sun โ˜€๏ธ came a-shininโ€™ through / The rain ๐ŸŒง๏ธ had stopped ๐Ÿ›‘ and the skies were blue.โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ Larry Graham (b. 1946) is renowned for playing bass in ๐ŸŽ™ Sly & The Family Stone as well as fronting ๐ŸŽ™ Graham Central Station. ย The baritone is also renowned for one big, beloved solo hit, ๐ŸŽต โ€œOne in a Million Youโ€.ย  โ€œOne in a Million Youโ€ is the opening track and crรจme de la crรจme of Grahamโ€™s 1980 album, fittingly titled, ๐Ÿ’ฟ One in a Million You. This R&B gem ๐Ÿ’Ž experienced pop success, reaching no. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. ย On the R&B songs chart, it peaked at no. 1. Graham received his sole ๐Ÿ† Grammy nomination for Best R&B Vocal Performance, Male for this gem at the 23rd Annual Grammy Awards (he ultimately lost to ๐ŸŽ™ George Benson). ย ย ย

โ€œOne in a Million Youโ€ is all about that extra special person.ย  Written by ๐ŸŽผโœ Sam Dees, the lyrics are utterly sublime, beginning with epic opening lines, โ€œLove had played its games on me so long / I started to believe Iโ€™d never find anyone.โ€ That sentiment is so relatable.ย  Likewise, in the second verse, Graham admits, โ€œI was a boxinglonely man with empty arms to fill.โ€ What happened, though? โ€œThen, I found a piece of happiness to call my own / And life is worth livinโ€™ again / For to love you, is to live.โ€ Yes, yes, yes โค๏ธ โค๏ธ โค๏ธ! The chorus is where the singerโ€™s bread is truly buttered.ย  The expressiveness with which he sings amplifies the level of authenticity, particular as the record progresses.ย

โ€œA one in a million chance of a lifetimeย

And life showed compassionย

And sent to me a stroke of love called โ€˜Youโ€™ย

A one in a million you.โ€ย

Well-performed, well-written, and well-produced, ๐ŸŽต โ€œOne in a Million Youโ€ is an R&B classic for the ages.ย  Yes, it was the only pop hit for Graham as a solo artist, but, it cemented his legacy, PERIOD.
