Lady Gaga starkly contrasts promo single âPerfect Illusionâ with country/folk-tinged, singer-songwriter, ballad, âMillion Reasons.â
After shocking the world by releasing âPerfect Illusionâ on September 9, Lady Gaga returns with a new single, âMillion Reasons.â Additionally, she returns with the announcement of an album. Joanne is due October 21. âPerfect Illusionâ got off to a fast start on the Billboard Hot 100. Unfortunately, it dipped in its second and third weeks. Perhaps âMillion Reasonsâ has the magic to propel Lady Gaga back to superstar status.
âMillion Reasonsâ serves as a stark contrast to âPerfect Illusion.â There are no âbells and whistlesâ in regards to the production. This is a pop/rock singer-songwriter song, not a danceable, fun record.  An additional wrinkle is a country tinge, thanks to co-writer Hillary Lindsey. Add that info, and âMillion Reasonsâ becomes a much more ambitious song for Lady Gaga â one of the most distinct of her career.
Gaga has had success in the non-dance department, specifically with ballad âSpeechlessâ (The Fame Monster) and âYoĂŒ and Iâ (Born This Way). Also, donât forget about âTill It Happens to You,â her Academy-Award nominated song from The Hunting Ground, co-written by Diane Warren.  Even so, you canât pinpoint it as where her bread has been buttered in regards to fame. Vocally, nonetheless, one listen to âMillion Reasonsâ shows she has the chops to successfully pull this off.  Itâs a departure, but certainly one thatâs worthwhile.
The songwriting for âMillion Reasonsâ is quite intriguing. Even though itâs not gimmicky in the least, thereâs plenty of repetition. Lyric âgive me a million reasonsâ is reiterated throughout the course of the song. This seems to be a product of the country element evoked. This also adds more catchiness to a song that doesnât have the âcatchyâ factor to aid it. The best moment, unsurprisingly, is the soaring chorus:
âI bow down to pray / I try to make the worst seem better / Lord, show me the way / to cut through all his worn out leather / Iâve got a hundred million reasons to walk away / but baby, I just need one good one to stay.â
The question is, what specifically is Gaga willing to walk away from? Love (âLord, show me the way / to cut through all his worn leatherâ) or the music biz (âyouâre giving me a million reasons to quit the showâ)? Itâs hard to know or decipher for sure, but that seems to be intent. Regardless, Lady Gaga is serious about it, showing incredible emotion and authenticity.
Final Thoughts
Lady Gaga delivers on âMillion Reasonsâ without question. The relevant question is how successful will this starkly contrasting single be? This is not your standard Lady Gaga record, so what will public perception be? How will this song fair from a commercial standpoint? Furthermore, Gaga has sent two very different ideas about the sound of Joanne. One is dance,  breakup anthem âPerfect Illusion,â and the other the country-tinged, pop/rock ballad, âMillion Reasons.â The results should be interesting.
