JP Cooper, ‘She’s on My Mind’ | Track Review
British singer/songwriter JP Cooper delivers a fun, relatable song with “She’s on My Mind,” a promo single from debut LP ‘Raised Under Grey Skies.’
Who is JP Cooper – “That is the question!” John Paul Cooper is an up-and-coming British singer/songwriter, signed to Island records. His debut album, Raised Under Grey Skies is set to arrive September 22, 2017. In advance of the release of his debut, Cooper has issued five singles, with two additional acoustic versions. That’s some promo right there. The single we are analyzing today is simply titled, “She’s on My Mind.” Get it JP!
“She’s on My Mind” is a soulful-pop song. This is a chill, easy-going record. The chillness is amplified by a dash of tropical, reggae cues, complementing the soulful-pop sensibilities. Throw in groove rhythmic guitar and compelling vocals by Cooper, and “She’s on My Mind” feels pretty accomplished. The crowning achievement of his vocal comes during the bridge, where the cool vocalist lets loose more, something that continues as he ad-libs over the final chorus.
Speaking of the chorus, it represents the best moment of “She’s on My Mind” overall. It’s successful because it catchy and unforgettable. No, depth isn’t the M.O., but JP Cooper gets his point across without needing to be particularly profound.
“She’s on my mind, she’s on my mind… / I can’t sleep at night / ‘Cause she ain’t by my side.”
All in all, JP Cooper gives a well-rounded performance on “She’s on My Mind.” While the record itself is not groundbreaking, it sufficiently captures highly relatable emotions. That definitely counts for something.
