Every time the name Josh Groban comes to mind, I hear the glorious “You Raise Me Up” in my head (“Per Te”, from the same album, is a close second).  Groban is a fantastic musician and definitely one of the most popular classical-crossover artists.  While innovative spirit doesn’t come to mind when referencing Groban, beautiful, expressive vocal performances do.  He returns with his first new single of 2018, “Symphony.”

The main source of accompaniment on “Symphony” initially is guitar. Josh Groban delivers clear, radiant pop vocals. By pop vocals, that means that Groban isn’t intentionally going for the “popera” sound (pop + opera).  After a relatively cool, calm, and collected verse, things begin to ascend during the chorus section.  The production welcomes strings to the mix, further beautifying the record.  Additionally, Groban gives us a dash of falsetto.

Naturally, the second verse is slightly fuller, with some of the record’s cards revealed.  The second chorus is much more developed, incorporating the full complement of sounds.  It’s followed by the bridge, the more powerful section of the song yet. That power serves as perfect fuel for the fire to make the final chorus the grandest of them all, sigh. Groban brings the final chorus back down after reaching that ‘fever pitch.’ Overall, “Symphony” has excellent pacing throughout its course.

Final Thoughts

Question: Does Josh Groban’s “Symphony” change the world? No. It’s an enjoyable, well-performed pop record from a prodigiously talented vocalist.  While he didn’t need to confirm anything, Groban continues to show he’s one of the best vocalists in the game.  That doesn’t mean that “Symphony” is the most memorable song of 2018 (it’s not).  But, this is promising by all means.
