John Newman, Fire in Me © IslandBritish pop-soul standout John Newman makes a truly ‘fierce’ return with his new, soulful-pop single, “Fire in Me.”

It’s been a more than a year since we’ve heard new music from soulful British pop musician, John Newman.  Newman made a great first impression in January 2013 with Tribute, particularly singles “Love Me Again” and “Losing Sleep.”  His sophomore album, Revolve (October 16, 2015), was a more quiet release – admittedly, I didn’t realize he’d released two albums! Hopefully, single “Fire in Me,” and his forthcoming third album makes a bigger splash for this distinct, talented musician.

One of the first things that stands out about “Fire in Me” is the production.  It is a mix of dance, modern pop, and a dash of soul.  The record opens with gimmicky, effect-laden vocals by Newman, which serve more of an instrumental role.  Additionally, there is rhythmic guitar accompaniment, piano, keyboards, and by the chorus, hard-hitting, pummeling chords.  Newman paints that backdrop with those unique pipes.  While he sounds a bit ‘rough around the edges’ initially on the first verse (mostly due to the grit and biting timbre of his instrument), he settles in marvelously.  By the chorus, he’s serving up mean ad-libs and fully-charged, commanding vocals.

Final Thoughts

All in all, John Newman returns sensationally on “Fire in Me.” He delivers a compelling vocal performance, filled with authenticity and energy.  The production is magnificent, successfully fusing multiple styles together.  In regards to songwriting, the crowning achievement is the chorus.
