John Legend & Pharrell Williams, Fireflies | Song Review

Award-winning musician John Legend, collaborating with Pharrell Williams, shines on “Fireflies,” a second intriguing single from his 2026 album, Muse. 

After releasing the captivating single, “Daylight”, John Legend, collaborating with Pharrell Williams, intrigues once more with “Fireflies.” “Fireflies” is the 14^th track from Legend’s 2026 studio album, Muse (arriving October 23). Williams wrote and produced “Fireflies.” Larry Gold, Matt Jones, Steven Tirpak, and Terrace Martin are credited as arrangers.

“Fireflies” begins with Pharrell’s signature four-count.  This time, the four-count sounds like a click or a snap. “Fireflies” is set in a minor key, giving it a darker, more dramatic sound and vibe. Early on, the unique, recurrent piano riff is established. A jazzy, loungey groove appears as John Legend sings, “Get away,” the final lyric of the chorus. Once the song settles in, Legend wows with ultra-soulful vocals. Plain and simple, that’s what he does! Legend sings expressively and theatrically, bringing the rhythmic melodies to life.  The lyrics are thought-provoking. “Ancestors’ blood, there’s iron in the clay / We trauma bond, survivor’s pain,” Legend sings in the first verse, and continues, “Felt our way through the dark where I was raised / Right moves made you smart where I was raised.” The second verse has a similar tenor: “The projects mean process where I was raised / Ain’t no gettin’ out, they’re designed to stay.” Legend is accompanied by a colorful sound palette and a hard-hitting Pharrellian beat.  The bridge shifts from minor to the relative major, keeping the track engaging and unique (“And I finish anything that I start / And I, and I hockey-stick every chart”). “Fireflies,” like “Daylight”, finds John Legend experimenting, with the help of Pharrell Williams.  Once again, the results are positive and quite intriguing.
