Jesse McCartney, Better With You © Blue SuitFollowing a four-year hiatus, pop artist Jesse McCartney is back with new music.  His first single of 2018 comes in the form of the safe, but thoughtful “Better with You.”

Following a stint with urban-, R&B-infused pop on his previous studio albums, Jesse McCartney flips the script.  First things first, after a four-year hiatus, the former teen-heartthrob returns with a new electro-infused pop single, “Better with You.” While the electro element of “Better with You” fits within sounds of 2018, many aspects of the song doesn’t feel far-fetched from 2004.

Taking a trip down memory lane, in 2004, a teenaged Jesse McCartney released his infectious hit single, “Beautiful Soul.” It was bubblegum, inoffensive pop at its best.  The record didn’t change the game, but it did secure the relatively underrated pop singer a platinum-certified album.  I say that to say that “Better with You” is reminiscent of the innocence and simplicity of “Beautiful Soul.” Obviously, McCartney is a fully-grown adult now and much more mature.  Still, this record feels pure, while McCartney seems to be throwing out the oversexualized music of the 10s in favor of actual love.

Final Thoughts

Give Jesse McCartney a lot of credit for the angelic vibes he gives off on “Better with You.”  He’s in love, it shows, and there’s something to be said about that.  The main rub with this comeback single is that it feels too safe.  While McCartney sounds good, he’s modest vocally, where a bit more oomph could’ve propelled this song to the next level.  Still, listening and considering where he’s coming from, it’s impossible not to have respect for him.
