Grammy-winning pop artist Jason Mraz wants you to Know. He’s back – if you catch my drift.  Know marks his first album in four years, after he quietly released Yes! After compelling on the thoughtful promo single “Have It All”, Mraz is back with an equally thoughtful single, “Unlonely.” The title of “Unlonely” gives away the theme of the song: love.

Essentially, Jason Mraz reveals his cards from the jump, on the chorus.  He sings, “I could be your one and only / I could make you unlonely.” How sweet. On the first verse which follows, Mraz is “looking for a good time / Following the good vibes.” He eventually states, “But a whole lot of love can make the clouds go away.”  On the pre-chorus, he urges his love interest, “Let me be your someone else,” before returning to the chorus.

The second verse is more rhythmic and pop-rap oriented.  Mraz even tosses in the obligatory f-bomb – you’re welcome. The second half of the verse fills the role of a second pre-chorus, though completely different from the first. Again, Mraz is basically spitting bars.  No frets, as the initial pre-chorus returns as the bridge, only expanded, leading into the final chorus.  Phew – what a mouthful!

Final Thoughts

What you can definitely take away from “Unlonely” is the fact that Jason Mraz has a clear, unique form set.  Vocally, his tenor is as sweet as ever, while his bars are both agile and endearing.  The theme of love is always well-executed in his hands, so “Unlonely” is no exception.  Perhaps what makes this single a smidge more engaging than the excellent “Have It All” is the fact that the production is more soulful – there’s a bit more funky, old-school vibes that add the cherry on top of this gem.
