Jason Derulo, ‘Tip Toe’ | Track Review
Urban-pop artist Jason Derulo returns with single “Tip Toe,” which is ready-made for the club and the dancefloor. He’s assisted by French Montana.
In the age of the single, Jason Derulo continues to shine. While Derulo has released albums with hits, his primary claim to fame has been his songs – better yet, his records. At this point, this is his niche and where he excels. Unsurprisingly, the ripped pop artist (or urban contemporary, depending how one characterizes him) has released number of singles in 2017, including “Tip Toe,” featuring French Montana.
“Tip Toe” checks off the boxes for a Jason Derulo record. That’s not necessarily either a good or a bad thing. It is predictable. The production is sleek – groovy, sensual, and made for the clubs. “Tip Toe” infuses the international flavor that is dominating the airwaves, and various music styles as of late. Vocally, he sounds respectable, incorporating sexy chest voice and some ripe falsetto. Lyrically, he’s shallow – shocker – focusing on sex. Even so, he doesn’t cross the line, which is a pro in the age of overblow explicitness. As usual, French Montana doesn’t do much – it’s meh at best.
All in all, “Tip Toe” is great for the club and having some fun. Beyond that, it’s forgettable. Jason Derulo has had many hits. Most of those hits trump this one by a mile. There’s good pieces here, but this is not a classic. Still, as aforementioned, perfect for the club.
