Harry Belafonte, Calypso [๐Ÿ“ท: Sony Music Entertainment]โ€œDay-o, day-ay-ay-o / Daylight come and me wanโ€™ go home.โ€ In 2023, the world lost a legend in ๐ŸŽ™ Harry Belafonte. The ๐Ÿ† Grammy-winner was a tremendous talent: singer, actor, and activist.ย  He was best known for his 1956 pop hit, ๐ŸŽต โ€œDay-O (The Banana Boat Song)โ€ (sometimes referred to as โ€œBanana Boatโ€).ย  Even though Belafonte landed a hit with โ€œDay-Oโ€ as the opener on his album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Calypso, the song is a traditional Jamaican folk song, performed in Jamaican patois. Furthermore, it is in call and response form (โ€œWork all night on a drink a rum / (Daylight come and me wanโ€™ go home)โ€).ย  The first time you hear โ€œBanana Boat,โ€ it is infectious as albeit.

classicโ€œBanana Boatโ€ commences with a dramatic performance by Belafonte, emphasizing the โ€œDay-oโ€ in a slow tempo. His tone and powerful pipes stand out to say the least. Soon enough, the calypso percussion kicks in in all its glory.ย  He leads the charge as the leader (the call), while the chorus masterfully responds with signature Daylight come and me wanโ€™ go home lyrics.ย  Perhaps the most memorable moment besides dramatic opening and closing moments by Harry is the verse, โ€œLift six foot, seven foot, eight foot, bunch.โ€ Memorably,ย  ๐Ÿ† Grammy winning rapper ๐ŸŽ™ Lil Wayne samples this portion for his own hit, ๐ŸŽต โ€œ6 Foot 7 Footโ€.ย  What more is there to say about ๐ŸŽต โ€œDay-O (The Banana Boat Song)โ€ โ€“ the music speaks for itself.
