Can you feel those vibes, those surefire Throwback Vibez?! Throwback Vibez is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past. Ah, there is nothing like a good oldie to get you fired up! The records featured in this column feature gems from the 20th century, with a few exceptions. All genres of music are welcome. In the 54th edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we recollect and reflect on Private Life performed by Grace Jones.

“Your private life drama, baby, leave me out.”
Jamaican singer, songwriter, model, and actress Grace Jones (b. 1948) said what she said! “Private Life” is the second track and third single from her 1980 album, Warm Leatherette. Although it sounds original in Jones’ hands, particularly leaning further into reggae, it is a cover.  Written by Chrissie Hynde (b. 1951), “Private Life” was originally recorded by The Pretenders earlier the same year. Neither version reached the pop charts in the United States, but it reached number 17 in the UK.  Alex Sadkin and Chris Blackwell produced it.

The percussion = locked in and loaded, baby!  Beyond the unforgettable rhythm, the band eats and leaves no crumbs, WOO! Do you know who else eats? Why, the lovely Grace Jones, of course! She slays whether she offers up spoken word (the verses) or sings (the chorus, excerpted earlier). She is far less pitched than Hynde’s vocals in the original. “Your marriage is a tragedy, but it’s not my concern,” she speaks in the first verse, and concludes, “I’m very superficial, I hate everything official.” Jones brings a fierce attitude, confidence, and ample personality. She rides the laid-back grooves like a champ, making you lean in to her every word. “Attachment to obligation, regret shit that’s so wet,” she asserts in the second verse, and continues, “And your sex life complications are not my fascinations.” When she’s not performing, the instrumentalists cook, including a juicy guitar solo and vibrant keys. “Private Life” is a surefire vibe, one that never grows old. Jones’ presence is firmly planted on this track, and her other classics.
