Gloria Spencer, I Got It | Music Lifts

In the 29^th edition of Music Lifts (2026), we’re uplifted by the late gospel singer and pianist Gloria Spencer performing “I Got It.”

Welcome to Music Lifts, featuring songs that encourage, inspire, and uplift the spirit; songs that exude fortitude, positivity, and resolve, even in the face of adversity.  Featured songs aren’t genre-specific; songs may or may not be faith-based. The goal is for these songs to make you feel better – be LIFTED to new heights!  So, for the 29^th edition of Music Lifts (2026), we highlight “I Got It” as performed by Gloria Spencer.

Gloria Spencer (1937 – 1976) should be remembered for her remarkable instrument; she had the voice of an angel. She could also play the piano. Spencer was tailor-made for black gospel music, given her skills.  However, it’s not that simple.  She sadly only lived to be 39 years old.  She’d been extremely obese throughout her entire life thanks to a thyroid condition.  When she died, she weighed just shy of 800 pounds.  During her career, she was marked as the World’s Largest Gospel Singer. Rather than focus on Spencer’s size 👎, I’m more focused on her music, which deserves the most attention and far more recognition.  “I Got It” is the funky fifth track from her 1972 debut album, Gloria’s Views of Glory. In 2007, when the album was rereleased, it was renamed I Got It.

Although “I Got It” is a gospel record, it grooves something fierce. The funk is established in the intro. Listen to that drum groove, ooh-wee! Also, setting the tone are energetic vocals, singing “yeah!” Following a delightful intro, “I Got It” kicks into full gear. Gloria Spencer sings the lead commandingly, serving up some awesome ad-libs and riffs, all the while testifying to what she’s got.  What does she have, exactly? J-E-S-U-S, and He is nothing short of wonderful 🙌!  But it’s not only Gloria speaking to his goodness.  She gets a great lift from those punchy, choral backing vocals, often responsible for the core melody during the chorus: “I got it!” Also, some of those background vocals also ad-lib, further amplifying the spiritual experience.  Spencer also delivers the verse… or whatever you’d like to label the section. “Some get-a happy, and they run / Others speak in an unknown tongue (Unknown tongue),” she sings, and continues, “Some cry out from a spiritual strain / While others speak to praise His holy name.” Hallelujah! Simple but powerful, “I Got It” is a terrific, uplifting record that reminds us that with Jesus on our side, there is no way we can fail 👏!
