“W

e’re a cocktail of disco, wine, and rocket fuel!” Now that’s a characterization, 🎙 The Foxtails! The duo, comprised of best friends 🎙 Ethan and 🎙 Kevin, go on to say, “We take a lot of pride in telling our story through energetic instrumentals and soaring silky vocals all pushed through a lens of positivity and hope.” Me like, me like! Furthermore, Kevin informs us the duo’s goal “Has always been to write kick-ass music that is honest and unapologetic.” Right on, man, right on! I could continue to excerpt the juiciest portions of our 222nd Q&A on The Musical Hype, but that would spoil it! So, without further ado, here is 🎤 Getting to Know… The Foxtails: Interview No. 222!

Starting things off, for those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes The Foxtails distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

🎤 We’re a cocktail of disco, wine, and rocket fuel! We make music to dance to with your eyes closed and lyrics to shout in your friends’ faces. We take a lot of pride in telling our story through energetic instrumentals and soaring silky vocals all pushed through a lens of positivity and hope.

Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did The Foxtails form and what were some of the goals or the visions you had as a band early on?

🎤 Ethan and I (Kevin) have been best friends for our 10 years since we shared that one fateful French class in high school. Our goal was to take our experiences and translate them into songs that would bring people together and spread positive energy through the narratives we tell in our music. Our goal has always been to write kick-ass music that is honest and unapologetic. If we’re doing that then only good things can come!

Let’s talk more about goals. Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

🎤 At first our goals were to make some of the ideas we had for songs into something tangible and create our first recordings. Now that we have a writing process down and material, our goal is to cut our teeth playing shows and play Coachella music festivals. Beyond that we also want to turn our band into a full on collective by expanding into other mediums such as radio/podcasting, fashion, and even coffee!

The Foxtails

Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

🎤 One of the beautiful things about our band is that Ethan and I have such different musical influences. Ethan is someone who is classically trained, can both perform and teach music at a professional level while I’m someone who is more of a music nerd and a crate-digger. We share influences like The 1975 (our favorite alt band) but we also have very different tastes. Ethan loves bands like My Chemical Romance, Fallout Boy, Panic! At the Disco and idolizes Gerard Way while I love acts like Father John Misty, Kanye West, and the Arctic Monkeys.

Ah, the fun stuff. What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance? Feel free to be creative.

🎤 We’re still waiting to write this chapter in our story but rest assured when you put us together, trouble has a habit of finding us!

Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

🎤 Kevin: My favorite song that we’ve recorded was 🎵 “Chill Vibe Girl”. It’s the first song we finished all the way and for a lot of folks including myself, it’s their favorite song we’ve made. There’s something special about this one and I feel like it encapsulates everything that makes our music great. Aside from that, it’s just a fun creative song!

🎤 Ethan: My personal favorite has got to be 🎵 “Neon, Baby”. I love the energy throughout, and the overall inspiring message. I also love the symbolism of “Neon” in this context, in my head it paints a picture of a grungy romance coming into fruition in an underground live music scene. I’m a sucker for love stories, so this one in particular gets my heart pumping!

The Foxtails

Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

🎤 Kevin being employed as a rocket scientist is usually a fun one people don’t expect. We’ve gone through a lot of things in our 26 odd years on the blue marble and we definitely have a lot of stories to tell! Stories we like to tell in album form ; )

Closing things out, what is The Foxtails currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

🎤 We’ve put out a series of singles and now we’ve shifted over to doing some more writing again with the goal of releasing an EP early next year. We’re in the middle of filming our first official music video as well which will be a ton of fun! Aside from that we’re reaching out to other bands and building a roster for our upcoming Foxtails Radio stream to premiere on YouTube and we’re looking to produce some original, premium merchandise too! Between that and some shows we’ll definitely have our hands full!

Thank you so much for sharing taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
