Getting to Know... S J Denney: Interview No. 168 [📷: S J Denney, Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype]For the 168th interview in our Getting to Know… series, we chat it up with Essex singer/songwriter S J Denney.

“My music has a lot of harmony, which seems to be missing from so many of today’s records.” Essex singer/songwriter 🎙 S J Denney definitely has a point there.  In an age where minimalism dominates, it’s refreshing to hear an artist speak about harmony (definitely tickles my fancy as a music theory nerd 🤓).  Here at The Musical Hype, we are honored to have Denney for the 168th Q&A on the site.  He provides insight into his craft, discusses influences and favorite songs from his catalogue, and speaks on current and future plans.  So, with no further introduction necessary, here is 🎤 Getting to Know… S J Denney: Interview No. 168!

Starting things off, for those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes you distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

🎤 I think I perform traditional Indie Folk music, largely influenced by the music of the 60s and 70s.  In keeping with this, my music has a lot of harmony, which seems to be missing from so many of today’s records.  I also think that my songs include a wide range of world instruments, just to keep things fresh. In terms of rocking socks off, I just keep it real and play from the heart.  I think the more I believe in what I’m singing, the more the audience does too.

Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did your solo career form and what were some of the goals or the visions you had early on?

🎤 I decided to go solo after several years of performing in bands.  I think my aspirations have always been to get my music into as many homes as possible and play bigger gigs.  I guess when you start out you also have aspirations of touring the world etc.

Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

🎤 I think the longer you work in music, the more you realise [realize] just how hard it is.  I’m no longer desperate to be a global superstar.  I just want to make honest music that connects with people.  Any else is a massive bonus.

Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

🎤 Like so many people, I’m so inspired by The Beatles.  They influenced my ear for melody, and they drive me to make diverse music.  The White Album is probably my favourite [favorite] album of all time.  I’m also a big fan of Neil Young.  His ditch trilogy is amazing, and I think the rawness of his music really influences me.  Lastly, Nick Drake.  His weird open chords have been a big source of inspiration.

Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

🎤 I think it was probably in my band actually.  We were playing Camden Barfly on a Friday night, which was a pretty big deal.  Before our second song, my bandmate realised [realized] he’d lost his capo.  So, we changed the setlist and I played an acoustic number.  Whilst this is all going on, you can see him rummaging through the dressing rooms, which were just to the right of the stage.  Funny when you look back at it.  Not quite so much at the time.  Although the audience actually thought it was staged and part of our act!

Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

🎤 I think my strongest song to date is 🎵 “The Unsung Hero”.  It’s dedicated to my wife, which makes it extra special.  From a recording production, I think it’s on the money, and I got to play a clarinet solo.

Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

🎤 My first venture into music was as a choir boy, and I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Sir Paul McCartney.  He was super cool, so at least the dream wasn’t shattered!

Closing things out, what are you currently working on or promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

🎤 I’ve just released a new single called 🎵 “The Sticking Point”.  It’s my most personal song yet.  I’ve got another single and EP scheduled for later this year.  I’m also already working on my 2022 releases.

Thank you so much for sharing taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
