Getting to Know… Polarity: Interview No. 296 [📷: Alfred Derks from Pixabay, Brent Faulkner, Darkmoon_Art from Pixabay, The Musical Hype, Polarity]In the 296th Q&A in our Getting to Know… series, we get the inside scoop from the Canadian alternative band, Polarity.

“We pride ourselves on having many little moving parts to our music and it’s something that when fans listen to our music, they can find something new to appreciate each time.” Awesome, 🎙 Polarity! In response to our first burning question, the band expounds, “We’re always pushing the paradigms of normality.” Like our many other Getting to Know Q&As, we get the inside scoop on the Canadian alternative rock collective’s genesis, goals, musical influences, and of course, current, and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into 🎤 Getting to Know…Polarity: Interview No. 296!

Starting things off, for those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes Polarity distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

🎤 Polarity, like its namesake, is the culmination of opposites. We piece together the heavy and the soft, the distorted and the acoustic, the aggressive and the calming into one set of sonic frequencies. We pride ourselves on having many little moving parts to our music and it’s something that when fans listen to our music, they can find something new to appreciate each time. We’re always pushing the paradigms of normality.

Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Polarity form and what were some of the goals or visions you had early on?

🎤 The internet. I was a vocalist/singer-songwriter looking for a heavy alt-rock outfit and 🎙 Mike Sitana was in a band with a few others looking for a singer. They sent me the skeleton of one song they were working on that required some vocals, so I wrote for it, and our first song 🎵 “Shadow” was born. That was basically the beginning of Mike and I forming POLARITY. As for our goals and visions when we first started this band, our initial goal was to bring our music to as many people across the globe as possible. We wanted to change lives. – 🎙 Jasmine Virginia

Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

🎤 Similar to what Jasmine said above, as for goals and visions they really haven’t changed very much over the years, we’ve gotten to larger stages and venues, but the dreams still remain, to bring our music to as many people as possible. We want our music to make you feel, we want our music to take you on an adventure, and we want it to make you feel emotions you haven’t felt before, that was our goal when this band initially began and that goal remains today. – 🎙 Deren (bass)

Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Whom would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

🎤 While each member of Polarity has their own personal influences, a few of the bands that would have influenced Polarity as a whole would be Tool & Dream Theater. We like to include similar intricacies in our riffs and always attempt to push thresholds when it comes to being unique in the music scene.

PolarityAh, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

🎤 Where do we even begin with this one? We’ve had many unique experiences during our shows. From losing power mid-way during a set and having to switch it up from a live to an acoustic performance. There was another time when we were on the east coast of Canada that a few of our members had gotten themselves into a lighthouse and may or may not have almost gotten themselves arrested for trespassing. Or even just the ridiculous conversations on our long drives ranging from sci-fi conspiracy theories to shoving donuts (or “donezies” as Jasmine and Deren call them) in each other’s faces.

Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

🎤 A: Good question, this is definitely a difficult one as all of our songs hold a place in our hearts for different reasons and it would be difficult to choose just one. If we absolutely had to choose one, I think 🎵 “Autonomy’s Conquest” would be it. Not only does that song encompass our namesake completely with the waves of heavy and soft in its sonic frequencies. It has also become a major fan favourite at live shows and you know we love to make our fans happy.

Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

🎤 A: Well to begin our vocalist, 🎙 Jasmine is a very talented visual artist and attends many gallery events throughout Ontario. Our bassist, 🎙 Deren, is a professional wrestler on the local indies as well as a game developer. 🎙 Sheldon, our guitarist, is very talented when it comes to creating custom guitars from scratch, he also has quite the vast Lego collection. 🎙 Michael, our other guitarist, is a talented martial artist and music teacher. And finally, our drummer Julian creates blown glass artwork and jewelry.

Closing things out, what is Polarity currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

🎤 A: We recently finished recording three singles live off the floor at Jukasa Studios here in Ontario, CA. The first single, 🎵 “Destruction of Memory” was released last month and the next one, 🎵 “Terra Firma” may or may not be released by the time this article releases, with the final single being released at the end of August. All three of these singles are very raw in its energy and we hope you enjoy them; they are very different from our usual studio work.

Thank you so much for sharing taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
