Getting to Know... Non Talkers: Interview #130 [📷: Non Talkers, Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype]For the 130th interview on The Musical Hype, we chat with Non Talkers, an intriguing indie pop band from Portugal.

“Our live shows are normally a roller coaster of emotions as we have very emotional songs but also tunes that makes you want to tap your feet.” That sounds pretty rad, Non Talkers.  Please, continue. “We also like to add some extra salt by playing a couple of great covers.” Salt 🧂 is good, or at least, it enhances and makes things even tastier!  Interview #130 isn’t about food of course, but we certainly are totally ‘appetized’ by this indie pop band from Portugal.  Who exactly are these Non Talkers? Well, they are Evita Branter (lead vocal, percussion), Marco Branter (lead vocal, acoustic guitar), João Arieira (drums), Filipe Alturas (keyboards, backing vocals), Casper (guitars), and Rangel (bass).  Rather than tell you about them, how about we let their answers to our burning questions speak for themselves! Without further ado, here is Getting to Know… Non Talkers:  Interview #130!

Let’s get this started off right. For those who may not be familiar with Non Talkers, what would you say makes your band distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

We do not have any special demands about food, we eat everything (laugh). We have two lead singers, Marco from Portugal and his wife Evita from Belgium. Both have distinctive voices and the blend of their vocals really works out well – one of the things that makes us stand out.  Our live shows are normally a roller coaster of emotions as we have very emotional songs but also tunes that makes you want to tap your feet. We also like to add some extra salt by playing a couple of great covers.

Non Talkers [📷: Non Talkers]Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Non Talkers form and what were some of the goals or the visions you had as a band early on?

We started in 2014 with the name Brantner and with the recording of our latest EP, 💿 Pendulum of time, in 2019, we decided to change the name to ‘Non Talkers.’ We always wanted to share some ideas and stories through music, but we just could not seem to find a sound that would define us. The task to insert us in a specific music genre was not easy. Defining that was one of the goals when recording our latest EP and the producer, Hugo Danin, and Recording Engineer, João Bessa, did great work with that.

Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

I think our goals remain the same, expressing ourselves through music and hopefully bringing something good to people with it.

Non Talkers [📷: Non Talkers]Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Who would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

We have too many influences to mention them here and it’s very hard to narrow them down to a few. The way they are influential in our music is subconscious as one of the hardest questions we get to answer is “who do you sound like?” When we write songs, we don’t think or listen to any particular artist or music style, so we don’t have any clue where the inspiration or influence comes from.

Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

There was a show that didn’t happen so long ago where the bassist had a last-minute situation and couldn’t play the gig. We were all ready with the set up ready on stage and we had to improvise and change our roles to be able to deliver the concert. It ended up running quite well but swapping roles, the musicians were not that loose on stage as they had to focus on their new instrument.

Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

Our favorite song so far is “Pendulum of time” as it is a real reflection about life and how little control we have over it. We also find that the mood of the song really takes you through that thought. We think it’s a powerful message that everyone can relate to.

Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

Not at this point, we cannot reveal all our secrets so early! (laugh)

Non Talkers [📷: Non Talkers]Closing this thing out, what is Non Talkers currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

We teamed up with the Russians and we’re working in a very secret project which consists in setting up a special sound structure to allow us to be the very first band ever to give a live concert in Mars! (just kidding). We are working on something far more exciting… our new album! The single will be released very soon, and we’ll talk more about it by then.

Thank you so much for sharing taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.

Thank you for having us, we wish you all the best.
