“As we’ve progressed as musicians, we’ve all started to like darker hip-hop sounding tracks.” Very, very interesting, 🎙 Made Of Eyes! Expounding upon their response to our first burning question, the Glasgow, UK band asserts, “I’d say as a band, we sort of create as we consume these dark/hip-hop influences… [It] definitely bled its way into our alternative routes, to make something that’s really hard to pigeonhole.” 🤘 In this Getting to Know… Q&A, we get the inside scoop on Made of Eyes’ genesis, goals, musical influences, and of course, current, and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into 🎤 Getting to Know… Made Of Eyes: Interview No. 367!

For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes Made Of Eyes distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

Well, I think at heart, all three of us were really inspired by alternative rock as teenagers, but as we’ve progressed as musicians, we’ve all started to like darker hip-hop sounding  tracks. I’d say as a band, we sort of create as we consume these dark/hip-hop influences… [It] definitely bled its way into our alternative routes, to make something that’s really hard to pigeonhole. The body of tracks are based around dark low-end sub, with dreamy sounding guitars/synth, then just a shit load of samples. We are fronted by two male singers with two really contrasting voices, so our music is super harmony rich, we definitely capitalize on this as much as we can and play to our strengths as a band. We always want live shows to be super euphoric, and we want to push the boundaries of genre, we’re in it for a good time.

Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Made Of Eyes form and what were some of the goals or visions you had early on?

🎙 Liam (bassist/percussionist/synth) used to play in an old band before Made Of Eyes, and one weekend, he went to a house party, the following morning after the house party, he woke up with a tattoo of his old bands logo in a pretty questionable place… and that’s all we’ll say on the matter HA!

Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

I think before our priorities rested with being the biggest band on the planet, going multiplatinum with every album and every single being a number one. But now we find so much more fulfilment in making something truly special, something genre bending, something unique and something that resonates with everyone who hears it. We are at a place in time where we just want to make the best music we can and to have sick as fuck live shows.

Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Whom would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

Billie Eilish, Imagine Dragons and Bring Me the Horizon are probably, in our opinion, the most genre bending and original artists out there in the mainstream right now. Their music has paved the way for what is possible for emerging artists, they’re all just an amazing example of what music can make its way into the mainstream, nowadays.

But then it’s a really difficult question, because then reality influences probably go back to the shit mums and dad used to play when we were kids. Artists like Shania Twain? Frank Sinatra?… Fucking ABBA!!! I think they all play a part in some way.

Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

I mean probably the biggest highlight for us was when we got to play the 02 ABC. It was a 2000 capacity venue in Glasgow, which devastatingly burned down in a really bad fire, back in summer of 2018. We felt humbled to be given the chance to play such an amazing venue before the tragedy, as it was host to some of the best life shows that Glasgow had ever seen. Even though we only played two like 400 people, it was the biggest stage we’d ever played on, and it was the most fun we’d ever had playing live. We have some footage of the show on Instagram and TikTok.

Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

I think collectively as a band we’d all agree that 🎵 “Palms” is the song that most accurately represents us as an artist, for us it has the perfect blend of what we want to put across. It has lo-fi dark-pop style verses and a massive euphoric chorus, we managed to find the perfect balance between electronic dark hip-hop and alternative music.

Made Of Eyes [📷: Made Of Eyes]Is there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

A couple of guys in the band have actually been writing and playing music together for a long time before Made of Eyes even existed. When we founded Made Of Eyes we played loads of shows way back when the band first started, before we released any music. I know it’s crazy but since releasing a first single, 🎵 “Room To Breathe”,  back in 2019, we actually haven’t played a single live show together as a band, so none of the music you hear from us on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music and other major streaming platforms, have never actually been played live on stage before.

Closing out, what is Made Of Eyes currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

Well, we definitely have more cool stuff coming, in the form of releases. Our next single is a track called 🎵 “Ins&Outs” and it’s dropping on August 25th. It’s probably the scariest release we’ve had to date, we’ve never push the boundaries so far outside of your comfort zone than we have with this track, but at setting the tone for what’s to come. A couple more singles this year and a very likely chance of an EP to follow. Our priority as a band as to finally have these tracks see the light of day and get them on a stage, that’s the thing we are most excited for.

Thank you so much for sharing and taking the time to answer these questions, and best of luck moving forward.
