“On streaming services, we are an alt-rock band with catchy choruses and heavy riffs, but when you come to see us live, there is a hint of unpredictability/surprise.” Awesome, awesome, 🎙 Hunter-Gatherer! Like our many other Getting to Know Q&As, we get the inside scoop on the Pickering, North Yorkshire, alt-rock band’s genesis, goals, musical influences, and of course, current, and future musical endeavors. So, without further ado, let’s jump right into 🎤 Getting to Know… Hunter-Gatherer: Interview No. 377!

For those who may not be familiar with you, what would you say makes Hunter-Gatherer distinct or unique? How do you rock the audience’s socks off?

On streaming services, we are an alt-rock band with catchy choruses and heavy riffs, but when you come to see us live, there is a hint of unpredictability/surprise. We add blistering guitar solos, extended segments, big intros/outros and we love getting the crowd involved.

Okay, let’s explore some juicy backstories. How did Hunter-Gatherer form and what were some of the goals or visions you had early on?

We underwent a new lineup at the start of 2023 and became a new band. Ted on bass and Lucas on drums already had chemistry from playing together previously and all three of us gelled together from the off. Our goal is to continue getting the after gig buzz as much as we can and push the band to grow as much as we can, whatever the outcome may be. If we can provide escapism to people, that is a goal.

Let’s talk more about goals.  Have your goals or your perspectives changed since first starting out? What do your aspirations or goals look like now?

We are crafting music to the best we can and not afraid to explore, that is a constant goal. Performing at festivals such as Slamdunk/Download/Bloodstock are the ultimate goals for us. As a kid I think all three of us wanted to be rock stars haha. But now, it really is important to make sure we are enjoying what we are doing, whist aiming high. This way if we don’t get to where we want to be, which are these festivals, we will be able to look back at our journey with pride.

Everybody is influenced by somebody else. Whom would you consider some of your biggest musical influences and how are they influential?

For Sam and Ted, both being guitarists Angus Young takes the top step. His energetic stage craft and soulful playing triggered them from a very young age, along with David Gilmour. Blink-182/Travis Barker are long heroes for Lucas on drums. We all share Linkin Park influences so there is a wide music range of influence which ultimately goes into the band.

Ah, the fun stuff.  What’s your craziest tour story or the wackiest thing that’s happened during a performance?  Feel free to be creative.

Sam lost a shoe mid performance. He also knocked his microphone stand over. Ended up guitar soloing on somebody’s shoulders who turned out had spinal surgery 5 weeks prior. Our audience can get pretty whacky when they get into the music which is entertaining and makes the gig even better.

Up until this point in your career, what would you describe as your favorite song you’ve recorded or performed live? What makes that song special?

Both out newest releases, 🎵 “Eyes Wide Shut”, and 🎵 “Day & Night” are really fun to play as they have so much energy and mark the start of our new chapter as a new band. We have started opening the set with these two.

Hunter-GathererIs there anything else awesome, cool, or left of center the world should know about you? Secret talents or surprising tidbits?

Lucas is an insane skateboarder, Sam loves to skinny dip – in the day, Ted is an awesome guitar player as well as bass player. Kind of annoys Sam does that.

Closing out, what is Hunter-Gatherer currently working on, promoting that you can share with us or want us to know about? We love secrets, but there’s no pressure.

We are in and out of the studio like yoyos at the minuet. Constantly writing, it looks like we are going to end up with an albums worth. We are on the lookout to play rock festivals in 2024, so any handy contacts who have gone through this email haven’t been contacted by us, please hit us up!
