GAYLE, "ur just horny" [📷: Atlantic]Although she’s still a teen, GAYLE addresses an adult situation on her second single and first of 2022, “ur just horny.”

T

he bubblegum pop of old once performed by teenage musicians seems to be a wrap.  No, that’s not to say that these young musicians don’t still have corny and schmaltzy moments, but the innocence has been stripped! The new breed of the teenage musician has edge and doesn’t hesitate to drop some bombs in their songs – f-bombs that is! 🎙 GAYLE is the latest up-and-coming teenage sensation, or so it seems, scoring a huge hit with the polarizing 🎵 “abcdefu”.  The key part of that divisive number being the “fu” portion! The 17-year-old is back hoping to achieve more success on the journey to her debut album with 🎵 “ur just horny”. Wow, what a song title!

“I sent you straight to hell / Show you new sides to yourself / Took scissors to your chastity belt / Then you fucked me over.” Wow – now that’s a lot, GAYLE! Two singles in, it’s clear that cutting edge and unapologetic is the modus operandi when it comes to the pop star.  On “ur just horny,” she’s angry that this guy only wants her for her body – ah, the universal, three-letter word, SEX.  Clearly, she wants more. On the chorus, she asserts:

“You don’t wanna be friends, you’re just horny

And fucked up at 2 a.m. in the mornin’

Say you’ve changed and you mean it

Say everything’s different, but I think I’d rather sleep in

You don’t wanna be friends, you’re just horny.”

The chorus essentially tells you what you need to know about this song.  This guy, formerly her friend, just wanted to have sex with her. GAYLE sings well, bringing that beloved teenage angst and attitude.

Final Thoughts 💭

unimpressed gorillaAs a non-Gen-Z person, do I buy what GAYLE is selling? I’m mixed but can acknowledge a couple of things she does well.  I like the fact that she calls out guys who exploit women for sex.  Also, she brings edginess, capturing attention by using the word horny in the song title – marketing.  Still, I’m skeptical.  Maybe it’s the full-grown millennial in me that doesn’t want GAYLE or her team to make her ‘too grown too fast.’
