All genres are welcome, ensuring something for every musical taste. In the 101^st edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we reflect on “Mass Appeal” performed by Gang Starr.

One of the first things that stands out about “Mass Appeal” is the sound.  The production work bangs – PERIOD! Although recorded more than three decades ago,  the music is timeless. The beat, the turntable scratches, effects, and samples are EVERYTHING! DJ Premier set up Guru for excellence with the work put in behind the boards. Guru does his part.  Actually, he exceeds, doing his ‘big one’ with a compelling cadence and flow. The rhymes are s-s-sick! “No way, you’ll never make it / Come with the weak shit, I’ll break it,” Guru brags in the first verse, and continues, “Step into my zone, mad rhymes will stifle ya / Lines like rifles go blast when I kick some ass /A lot of rappers be like one-time wonders.” He’s confident, and spits facts! In the second verse, he definitely ‘fascinates’: “I be like fascinatin’ when I be updatin’ / Cuttin’ off wack kids, pullin’ their trump cards / I thump hard and make ’em say that I’m God.” Ooh-wee! In the third and final verse, he goes H.A.M., barely breaking a sweat: “Just like the seashore, I’m calm but wild / With my monotone style / Because I don’t need gimmicks / Give me a fly beat, and I’m all in it.” Fly beat? CHECK ✅! Incredible rhymes? Also, CHECK ✅!  “Mass Appeal” earned Gang Starr success by going hard. “Maybe your soul you’d sell to have mass appeal.” Gang Starr didn’t have to sell their souls to earn mass appeal with this hip-hop classic.
