G-Eazy, “Free Porn Cheap Drugs” [Photo Credit: RCA]G-Eazy ‘shocks the world’ with “Free Porn Cheap Drugs,” an about face from rapping to singing in an alternative style.

For as much success as he’s had, G-Eazy has been a pretty predictable artist throughout his career. Essentially, we know what to expect from him.  Case in point: 13 Songs Where G-Eazy Proves He’s a Total Playboy.  Yes, back in 2017 I was able to compile a list about the rapper who has perfected the sexed-up, playboy persona.  Going into single “Free Porn Cheap Drugs,” the expectation is predictability, however, the playboy himself shocks the world.

The title “Free Porn Cheap Drugs” definitely wouldn’t suggest any change of pace, however, rather than rapping, G-Eazy sings…  Not only does he sing, the backdrop (produced by Jesse Ack and Austin Ward) is quite a far cry from a traditional hip-hop backdrop.  Sure, there’s a ‘vibe,’ and we all know that vibe is a big deal within the genre, but, it’s more rock oriented.  Listening to this record, it’s definitely something that, say, Post Malone might serve up.  That said, Eazy has a very different voice than PM, so, it’s definitely unique to him (No unique vibrato, ha-ha).

Is “Free Porn Cheap Drugs” a success? I would argue that while I appreciate the innovative spirit that G-Eazy is showing, it is a surprising shift that takes some time to get used to.  Definitely an about face. The form isn’t standard, even if it uses a chorus (twice) and one verse.  That’s become more the norm though.  Also, despite that bold title, lyrically, Eazy is actually more conservative than normal, eschewing profanity – what? Who is this?

“This vicious cycle spins and spins
It picks back up where it begins
Is this how the story ends?
Free porn, cheap drugs, and late-night friends...”

Final Thoughts

So, what does one make of “Free Porn Cheap Drugs?” Honestly, after a couple of listens, I’m not even sure! What I do know, however, is that this record is a ‘vibe’ and it’s great to hear G-Eazy take a risk, something he’s not noted for.  Is it a miss? No.  Is it a triumph? I’d say no as well, but I respect it.
