Wacky Wednesday vibes commence!

“My balls feel like a pair of maracas…”
I beg your finest pardon 😳? Legendary guitarist and composer Frank Zappa (1940 – 1993) was one of a kind.  He exemplified an innovative spirit – pushing the envelope with his discography. His 1979 album, Joe’s Garage Acts I, II & III, was a rock opera that was originally released as two separate albums. “Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?” appears as the seventh track on the first disc of the album.  Without listening, the song title instantly raises eyebrows 👀. Zappa composed and produced the brief song. Ike Willis (b. 1955), performing as the album’s main character Joe, contributes the lead vocals.

It’s in the third verse where he has maraca balls, adding, “Oh God, I probably got the gono-co-co-coccus!” For context, in “On The Bus,” Lucille “gives him an unpronounceable disease…” Well, it seems he has Gonorrhea… “Why Does It Hurt When I Pee?” is something! The music rocks, and Ike Willis sounds amazing as he sings this outlandish, over-the-top song.  Frank Zappa called it a stupid song with a stupid arrangement. Ultimately, like so many of Zappa’s songs, there’s nothing stupid about the creativity and musicianship.
