Foo Fighters, Medicine at Midnight [📷: RCA]Following a polarizing promo single, Foo Fighters return to form on their second single from Medicine at Midnight, “No Son of Mine.”

“No son of mine, will ever do / The work of villains, the will of fools.” Right on, right on!  There are only a select few rock artists that build up huge anticipation when they announce a new album in the 2020s.  The 🎙 Dave Grohl-led, 🏆 Grammy-winning, totally bad@$$ 🎙 Foo Fighters are among those select few.  Yes, the Foos have been around for a ‘minute’ but are still able to build incredible buzz.  In 2021, they return with a brand-new studio album, 💿 Medicine at Midnight.  The promo process for Medicine at Midnight commenced in bumpy fashion with the polarizing 🎵 “Shame Shame” – just a different sort of record. The set’s second single, 🎵 “No Son of Mine” is more of a return to form. If nothing else, it’s more energetic and rousing than “Shame Shame.”

So, what are some of the pros of “No Son of Mine?” How about those electrifying, jagged guitars? They pretty much roar, like a lion, from the jump.  Furthermore, the bass anchors things down, while the drums pummel hard AF.  Of course, the biggest pro is none other than the electrifying front man, Grohl, who is as potent and turned-up as ever.  Believe it or not, Grohl is in his early 50s – say what! Everything about “No Son of Mine” rocks hard, including the repetitive, infectious and in-your-face titular lyric.  Not only does “No son of mine” appear on the chorus (four times in most instances) it appears on every verse multiple times.  There’s no way you’ll forget the hook.  No, Foo Fighters aren’t serving up a poetic lyrical masterpiece, but they have clear intent, per the front man’s quote from Rolling Stone: “Lyrically it’s meant to poke at the hypocrisy of self-righteous leaders, people that are guilty of committing the crimes they’re supposedly against…”

Final Thoughts 💭

I was skeptical of “Shame Shame,” hence, my expectations became tempered for successive singles from Medicine at Midnight. That said, “No Sone of Mine” is more of the Foo Fighters I, and many fans are accustomed to. “No Son of Mine” is big and obnoxious, and we wouldn’t have it any other way!
