pparently, 🎙 Florence + The Machine suffers from a case of 💿 Dance Fever on their fifth studio album.  The album arrives four years after the last album, High As Hope, where 🎙 Florence Welch informed us about a 🎵 “Big God”. 🎵 “My Love” marks the third single released in advance of the album’s mid-May release.  True to its dance title, “My Love” has a groove that bolsters it.  Produced with 🎛 Dave Bayley of 🎙 Glass Animals fame, perhaps that’s why “My Love” contrasts some of Welch’s work in the past.  The results, however, are positive from the opening tip.

Notably, “My Love” was released with both the edit and standard version.  The edit shaves a minute off the duration, clocking in under three minutes.  Even at its longest, “My Love” runs just under four minutes, which isn’t too much to ask of listeners. The four-minute version adds an intro, which sounds celestial – at least the textures and the vibe.  During this intro, we hear the powerful pipes of Welch sustaining notes which is always welcoming to the ear.  When “My Love” kicks into gear with its groove and tempo, Welch is on autopilot with her distinct, gorgeous vocals.  She pulls back more in the verses, packing a mightier punch on the chorus.  Clearly, like a disco, dance, or pop record, the chorus is the centerpiece for all to behold:

“So, tell me where to put my love

Do I wait for time to do what it does?

I don’t know where to put my love.”

Thematically, Welch references a lack of inspiration (writer’s block) and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.  “I was always able to write my way out / The song always made sense to me,” she sings in the first verse, continuing, “Now I find that when I look down / Every page is empty.” The good news is the inspiration finally materialized!

Final Thoughts 💭

seal of approvalAll in all, Florence + The Machine shines on “My Love.”  There’s lots to like about this record from the production, singing, and theme.  Four years is. long time without Florence Welch but at least she returns with a surefire bang – and some groove too!
