FINNEAS, "What They'll Say About Us" [Photo Credit: OYOY]FINNEAS sings beautifully and sounds sincere & incredibly thoughtful on the well-rounded single, “What They’ll Say About Us.”

Billie Eilish may be the superstar of the O’Connell family, but her older brother, FINNEAS is incredibly talented in his own right.  In addition to being the producer that help make WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? the alt-pop masterpiece it was, he’s got a fanastic voice and great songwriting chops himself.  His ‘ace in the hole’ is definitely “I Lost a Friend” from Blood Harmony (rereleased in its deluxe version in 2020).  That said, single “What They’ll Say About Us” shows his own bright future as solo artist beyond his sister and his big hit..

“What They’ll Say About Us” is polished – finesse, finesse, finesse.  From a production standpoint, it’s soundly executed and easy on the ears.  FINNEAS certainly doesn’t ‘change the game’ with this piano-driven backdrop, but it is the perfect fit for this song and for the artist he aspires to be.  Beyond the production, both his vocals and the songwriting are also nice.  O’Connell can sing, quite expressively.  While I’d argue he digs in more than his little sister, he never over sings and still prefers subtlety over histrionics.  As for the songwriting, it’s simple yet telling.  He reflects on the state of the world in the turbulent 2020, best summing up his points on the chorus:

“We’ve got the time to take the world
And make it better than it ever was
That’s what they’ll say about us.”

Final Thoughts

All in all, FINNEAS delivers on “What They’ll Say About Us.” He seems sincere, singing expressively and penning simple but meaningful lyrics.  The production isn’t flashy but appropriate given the tone and theme of the record itself.  While I don’t leave “What They’ll Say About Us” wowed, I think it’s well executed and quite consistent from O’Connell – NO CAP!
