Extreme, More Than Words | Throwback Vibez

In the 98^th edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we reflect on “More Than Words,” the Grammy-nominated song by the Boston rock band Extreme.

All genres are welcome, ensuring something for every musical taste. In the 98^th edition of Throwback Vibez (2026), we reflect on “More Than Words” performed by Extreme.

Noted.  Actions speak louder than words! Boston-formed rock band Extreme scored a massive, once-in-a-lifetime hit with “More Than Words.” “More Than Words” is the fifth track from their second studio album, Extreme II: Pornograffitti. It peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The Recording Industry Association of America certified the single gold. The song earned Extreme their only Grammy nomination: Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. Who beat ‘em? That would be R.E.M., who scored another timeless classic with “Losing My Religion”. Vocalist Gary Cherone and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt composed “More Than Words,” while Michael Wagener produced it.

So, what makes “More Than Words” the sugar, honey, and iced tea? This is a moving, stripped rock ballad.  Nuno Bettencourt’s uses acoustic guitar rather than an electric guitar.  Gary Cherone, meanwhile, gives an expressive, passionate vocal performance.  Bettencourt supports Cherone’s lead vocals with background vocals, creating some powerful, sublime vocal harmonies. Their vocal synergy is otherworldly. The melodies are tuneful throughout.  The lyrics are quite memorable. To reiterate, they promote actions over words.  “Saying, ‘I love you’ / Is not the words I want to hear from you,” Cherone asserts in the first verse. In the second, he sings, “All you have to do is close your eyes / And just reach out your hands / And touch me, hold me close, don’t ever let me go.” He makes a legitimate point! The pre-chorus, excerpted earlier, is one of the key moments. That lowered seventh within the melody truly hits. So does that minor IV chord 🤓. The chorus is delightful, too, particularly thanks to a mix of tender and soaring vocals.

If my heart was torn in two?

More than words to show you feel

That your love for me is real

What would you say

If I took those words away?

Then you couldn’t make things new

Just by saying, ‘I love you’.”

The post-chorus can’t be denied either: “Da-de-da-la-de-da…” To reiterate, “More Than Words” is a once-in-a-lifetime hit from Extreme.  How many bands or musicians would have killed to score such a smash?  Great singing, just the right musical accompaniment, and awesome songwriting make this one unforgettable.
