Eminem, ‘Walk on Water’ | Track Review
Assisted by Beyoncé, Eminem returns with one of the most reflective, thoughtful singles of his decorated career, “Walk on Water.”
It’s hard to believe that Eminem is 45 years old. How fast the time flies. To those who grew up with the unapologetic Detroit rapper, it seems like only yesterday he was “shocking the world” with never ceasing controversy. But, there comes a time when even the most innovative, game changing musicians have revealed the majority of their tricks. For Eminem, on single “Walking on Water,” he seems to reflect upon his place on Earth as well as his career. He’s assisted by Beyoncé.
“Walk on Water” commences with Beyoncé singing the chorus, accompanied by piano. This chorus foreshadows the sentiment of the song.
“I walk on water / But I ain’t no Jesus / I walk on water / But only when it freezes.”
Beyoncé’s voice is beautiful, pure, and sincere. Following the second verse by Eminem, the chorus expands, including a post-chorus section.
“Cause I’m only human, just like you / Making my mistakes, oh if you only knew / I don’t think you should believe in me the way that you do / ‘Cause I’m terrified to let you down, oh.”
The chorus sets up Eminem for a reflective, honest set of rhymes. The sincerity of the MC is what most stands about this record. Rather than try to be unapologetic or force things, he’s honest where he stands in life and in his career. On the second verse, he raps:
“God’s given me all this, still I feel no different regardless / Kids look to me as a god, this is retarded / If only they knew, it’s a façade and it’s exhaustive / and I try not listen to nonsense.”
All in all, Eminem delivers one of the most thoughtful songs of his career. At this point, he’s past his prime – 45 years old. As a middle-aged rapper, he seems to come to terms that his best days have come and gone, and keeping up – living to lofty expectations – is difficult. Despite how arduous the task may be for the innovative rapper, he shines on this simply produced, honest record.
