World, “get ready, get ready, get ready” for DJ/producer Elijah Soltan! The 19-year old from Camarillo, California is bringing some freshness to the game with his thrilling, four-track EP, Spin Wrld.  Sure, there are plenty of DJs/producers in the world dropping sick and totally sleek, slick EDM, but Soltan’s new project seeks to “redefine EDM in a hip-hop dominate industry.” ‘Say what,’ and how so? Eclecticism and experimentation my friends – taking risks and stretching the ear beyond the familiar to the less familiar. A paradigm shift of sorts. Spin Wrld succeeds because it embraces innovative spirit, incorporating hip-hop and trap and expanding the definition and characterization of EDM.

“WILD”

“Gotta get to work!” As its title suggests,  “WILD” kicks off Spin Wrld in electrifying fashion.  The aforementioned ‘eclecticism’ is on full display, as the listener is given ample ear candy. Layers upon layers make for a truly rich palette that incorporates a sick, robust bass line, a funky, throwback house-infused groove, and of course, the looped vocal sample mentioned at the top of the paragraph.  That doesn’t even cover the colorful synth action! A truly “WILD” but great way to kick off his first official release.

“Champion”

Elijah Soltan“I kick shit like Air Force Ones… TURN MY SHIT UP!” Da-yum – confident much? Well, Elijah Soltan has every right to be! If “WILD” didn’t already convince you that E.S. was a surefire ‘champ,’ well, follow-up track  “Champion” confirms it.  The record is a prime example of redefining EDM to incorporate hip-hop cues.  The dark vibes are established from the onset, characterized by rhythmic, driving synths, and air of enigma that’s also drenched in heaping dose of swagger.Following the tone-setting intro, the devastating, bass-heavy thudding drums hit you right in the chest, accompanied by low-key hip-hop rhymes chocked-full of attitude.  The musical excellence and undeniable ear candy continue in all their glory, with ‘crescendoing’ rhythms reaching a fever pitch, not to mention variations on the groove, including breaking into a killer half-time feel before returning to the busy, hyper-rhythmic beat.

“Spin Wrld” & “Run it Up”

Following the ‘champion’ of the bunch is tough AF.  Luckily, title track “Spin Wrld” keeps the EP going strong. Again, it is the palette of sounds, particularly the synths that really make this particular record.  Adding to that awesomeness are a variety of pitch-shifted vocals, the banging beat fusing trap, house, and everything in between, and merely the way Soltan blends various ideas.  Last but not least, he closes Spin Wlrd out with “Run it Up,” which begins somewhat kinder and gentler compared to the three preceding tracks.  Don’t worry – it doesn’t last long.  Soon enough, Soltan is throwing the full bag of tricks (production tricks that is) and the results remain the same – totally sick. Safe to say, this 19-year old is no slouch when it comes to laying down tracks.  Among the best features of “Run it Up” are the chordal punches.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “The kid is alright.” Elijah Soltan is a name you definitely want keep on your radar – he’s got a bright future, evidenced by this tight, four-track effort.  Why’s Spin Wrld a triumph? Beats, synths, and embracing innovative spirit and merely going beyond the expected within EDM circles. Totally check this out – you won’t regret it!
