Chart Happenings no. 5: Drake remains dominant on both the Billboard 200 and the Billboard Hot 100, while 6ix9ine debuts at no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Sometimes I ask myself, self, why do you bother to write this column? I answer back, because guess I have nothing better to do. There you have it. Chart Happenings #5 ladies and gents. The headline will only shock somebody who lives under a rock – Drake remains dominant on both the Billboard 200 and the Billboard Hot 100. But, we do get a little bit of change as 6ix9ine does big things with his single “FEFE”, featuring Nicki Minaj. Alright, let’s dig into this!
1.Drake, Drake, Drake, Drake, DRAKE! That’s what up right now and nobody is stopping it. Scorpion spends a fourth week at no. 1 on the Billboard 200, while “In My Feelings” spends a third week at no. 1 on the Hot 100. Any questions?
2.On the Hot 100, 6ix9ine definitely has the more intriguing story. He launches at no. 4 with “FEFE”, featuring Nicki Minaj. Of course, not only is 6ix9ine a ‘walking controversy’ himself, Nicki Minaj caught flack for collaborating with him considering his controversies. Regardless, the single is a hit.
3.Other than ‘you-know-who,’ summers sucks for these other artists out here – just saying. The Internet debut rather unimpressively at no. 26 with Hive Mind. In case you were wondering, that’s the ‘highest ranking debut’ on the Billboard 200. Geez Louise! The next newbie is all the way down at no. 76 – The 88rising compilation, Head in the Clouds. Talk about sucky numbers! Popcaan landed at no. 171 with Forever, Meg Myers at no. 182 with Take Me to the Disco. Disappointed not to see my boy Ryan Beatty get some love for Boy in Jeans. Again, it’s a great album that too few people are talking about, or better yet, streaming or purchasing.
4.6ix9ine earned top debut honors on the Billboard Hot 100, but some others entered onto the chart. Imagine Dragons are “Natural” at no. 37. Chance the Rapper takes “I Might Need Security” to a no. 60 bow, while the rest of his singles are nowhere to be found. Ciara is thinking “Level Up” at no.77, while shockingly, Daniel Caesar finally sees his awesome “Best Part” (featuring H.E.R.) debut at no. 81. C’mon folks – Freudian came out a nearly a year ago, and you’re just now taking notice of this Grammy-nominated standout? Billie Eilish gets into the action with her sick “You Should See Me in a Crown” landing at no. 93. Last but not least, NF appears with “Lie” at no. 97.
5.One final note. Tyga has a hit on his hands with “Taste,” featuring Offset. It’s been a minute since Tyga had a hit… just saying!
