On this edition of 5ive Songs, we select five songs that are associated with being DONE ✅ with something (or somebody) in some form or fashion.
On 5ive Songs, we (I) keep things short and sweet – no extra calories or needless fluff. There’s a topic, five songs, and a short blurb that doesn’t exceed a paragraph. Yes, it’s a playlist, but it’s a miniature playlist that shouldn’t take much time to consume. On this edition of 5ive Songs, we select five songs that are associated with being DONE ✅ with something (or somebody) in some form or fashion.
1. The Kid LAROI, “So Done”
💿 F*CK LOVE (SAVAGE) • 🏷 Columbia • 📅 2020
“I’m done, so done, I’m done with all the games you play,” 🎙 The Kid LAROI asserts on the chorus of 🎵 “SO DONE”. So, what exactly is young Charlton Howard ‘done’ with? Love – he’s not ready for it right now! The result of his pain is an enjoyable, melodic single from 💿 F*CK LOVE (SAVAGE). Given the melodic nature of this track, as well as Howard’s distinct, expressive sound, he perfectly captures the plight of love to be honest. “Sometimes, I sit and I think about why / I even trusted you… / Want you to walk out and walk out of my life.” He never goes incredibly deep, but whether you’re his age – an ‘angst-laden teen’, twice his age (shout-out millennials), or far older, the subject at hand is quite relatable.
2. Alicia Keys, “So Done”
Ft. Khalid
💿 Alicia • 🏷 RCA • 📅 2020
“’Cause I’m so, so done / Guardin’ my tongue, holdin’ me back / I’m livin’ the way that I want…” 🎵 “So Done” gave Grammy winning 🏆 R&B artist 🎙 Alicia Keys a sleek, more commercial record than much of 💿 Alicia. Enlisting 🎙 Khalid for the assist shows that the ‘true OG of R&B’ is able to assimilate with the times and evolve, at least to some extent. “So Done” features a lovely harmonic progression, which helps to construct a chill, sensual, and soulful sound. The production is strong with guitars serving as the main accompaniment; the sound is throwback but refreshing. The biggest reason why it’s a winner for Keys is her voice; she sounds strong. Furthermore, the chemistry between her and Khalid is nice.
3. Charlie Puth, “Done for Me”
Ft. Kehlani
💿 Voicenotes • 🏷 Artist Partner Group • 📅 2018
“I lie for you, baby / Die for you, baby / Cry for you, baby / But tell me what you’ve done for me…” 🎵 “Done for Me” kept the hits right on coming for 🎙 Charlie Puth, who ‘stepped up his game’ on his sophomore album, 💿 Voicenotes. “Done for Me” embraces contemporary R&B and matters of the heart – two things that suit Puth well, all in all. The beat – the groove – makes this record danceable. Vocally, Puth is compelling, possessing an enviable tone. Assisted by Grammy-nominated 🏆 artist 🎙 Kehlani, she sounds terrific, delivering a balanced, nuanced vocal performance. The chemistry between both is great towards the end of the record, where they harmonize and provide ad-libs.

4. 21 Savage & Metro Boomin, “Said N Done”
💿 Savage Mode II • 🏷 Epic • 📅 2020
On 💿 Savage Mode II, 🎙 21 Savage and 🎙 Metro Boomin collaborated once again. A follow-up to Savage Mode (2016), 21 and ‘Young Metro’ are on autopilot, delivering some truly compelling bangers. They close the album with 🎵 “Said N Done,” the rare record in a major key. Is 21 really jubilant, given the major key? Nah – not his style! Still, “Said N Done” is ‘happier’ (contextually) than much of what precedes it on Savage Mode II and moves beyond guns and violence.
“When it’s all said and done, who you gon’ ride for? Who you gon’ slide for? Who you down to die for? I gave her my heart, she was tellin’ lies, though Sleepin’ with my guys, though, that shit turned my heart cold I came from the bottom, I didn’t have a dime, bro Apartments with the blinds, bro, still got on my grind, though I know my mama proud, everybody fine, bro This shit took some time, bro, finally get my shine on.”
5. Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, “What’ve I Done to Help”
💿 Reunions • 🏷 Southeastern • 📅 2020
“What’ve I done to help? / What’ve I done to help? / Somebody save me / What’ve I done to help? / What’ve I done to help? / And not myself?” 💿 Reunions, the 2020 studio album by 🎙 Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, kicks off in truly epic fashion with 🎵 “What’ve I Done to Help.” The six-and-a-half-minute-plus juggernaut features a heaping dose of rhythmic acoustic guitar (electric too), strings, and ample soulfulness from 🎙 Jason Isbell. Further contributing to the epic nature of the opener is a simple but incredibly catchy and effective chorus (aforementioned), and strong, personal and introspective songwriting overall. Notably, Isbell speaks about his past missteps.
“See, I’ve made mistakes that I can’t erase Some of the love I’ve lost will not come back to me ...She didn’t deserve it, nobody ever deserves it But I cut anchor and I drifted out to sea And you found me busted and somehow you trust I was not what I could be.”
