Charlie Puth, Voicenotes © AtlanticOn “Done for Me,” the fourth single from his sophomore album ‘Voicenotes,’ Charlie Puth continues to show greater maturity as an artist.  He taps Kehlani for the assist.

Charlie Puth is on a roll.  Man, those are words that I wouldn’t have dare uttered in 2016, with the release of his so-so debut, Nine Track Mind.  Nonetheless, the perfect-pitched, golden-voiced 26-year old is on an upward trajectory with his sophomore album, Voicenotes (May 11, 2018). Three singles in and Puth is showing he’s far better than the totally awkward “Marvin Gaye.”  His fourth advance single, “Done for Me,” featuring Kehlani, keeps the hits right on coming.

Like previous single “If You Leave Me Now”, “Done for Me” embraces urban contemporary music, an excellent look for Puth.  There’s an aura of Michael Jackson here.  No, he doesn’t totally become an R&B singer – there’s still plenty of pop appeal.  Furthermore, the groove makes this record perfect for dancing.  Like “Attention”, “Done for Me” thrives off its beat.  Vocally, Puth continues to become a more and more compelling vocalist.  There’s a lightness about his instrument, yet it’s absolutely beautiful – his tone is enviable.

Charlie Puth isn’t the only accomplished musician on this joint.  He’s joined by another Grammy-nominated artist, Kehlani.  As shown throughout the course of SweetSexySavage, Kehlani sounds terrific.  She never over-sings, delivering a balanced, nuanced vocal performance.  Her chemistry with Puth is great towards the end of the record, when they harmonize as well as the ad-libs.

Final Thoughts

While I don’t take back my opinions on Nine Track Mind, clearly, Charlie Puth is becoming the artist that he truly wants to be.  Single after single, it’s clear that Voicenotes is a big step for him, showcasing greater maturity and versatility.  “Done for Me” gives him his fourth consistent, enjoyable single.  Tapping Kehlani for the assist was a great idea.
