Doja Cat, Candy © Kemosabe / AtlanticRising rapper-singer Doja Cat continues to ‘push the envelope’ on her latest, risqué and sensually-driven single, “Candy.”

“I can be your sugar when your fiending for that sweet spot.” Ooh la-la! “Candy” gives rising rapper/singer Doja Cat yet another risqué, sensually-driven record. My first encounter with this unapologetic artist came by chance, hearing and viewing the music video for the innuendo-laden “Go to Town.” While a bold song, Doja Cat proves she has plenty of potential, even if she seems a wee bit too stuck on sex.  The sex continues on candy, confirmed by the excerpted, aforementioned lyrics.

The selected lyrics, from the second verse are one example of the infusion of sex on the track.  At the end of the first verse, she sings, “He’s the one who’s sweet enough, who’ll shoot to make that high note.” Something tells me that high note has nothing to do with music… If that’s not enough, Doja Cat focuses on the imitation flavor he’s experiencing.  She sings:

“She’s just like candy, she’s so sweet
But you know that it ain’t real cherry, know it ain’t real cherry.”

To quote Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell, “Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing.” Moving away from the lyrical content, the sound of the production is smooth and incredibly sleek, exemplifying the modern, urban-pop style.  Naturally, this contemporary vibe perfectly matches the bold, naughty nature of this record.

Final Thoughts

Doja Cat is something… that’s about the size of it.  “Candy” doesn’t cover new territory – sex is prevalent across most genres – but it’s sexy and certainly enticing.  It’ll be interesting to hear Cat’s debut album.
