Death Cab For Cutie delivers another compelling song with “Punching the Flowers,” the second single from their 11th LP, I Built You A Tower.
“Punching the Flowers” cooks from the get-go. The drumming, in particular, kicks ass and takes names; it’s punchy and hits you right in the chest. Beyond the percussion, the guitar riffs are electrifying, while the bass sounds quite assertive, holding things down on the low end. Beyond the captivating music, Ben Gibbard compels with his clear, commanding vocals and engaging storytelling. The man he narrativizes is struggling in both verses, including having “mildew on his soul” in the second. Despite the fact she offers a shoulder for him to lean on, “He wanted to go it alone / Because he’d never been alone / Or felt the myth of control.” Okay… The chorus marks the song’s most memorable moment. “It always seemed he was punching the flowers / Ruminating like a fatalist for hours,” Gibbard sings, and continues, “With a voice like the sound of slamming doors.” The lyrics are poetic and quite thought-provoking. The bridge continues these clever, perfectly penned moments. Ultimately, “Punching the Flowers” marks a sensational addition to the Death Cab For Cutie catalogue. Great singing, alluring storytelling (songwriting), and top-notch musicianship (band and production) make this a surefire winner.
