COIN, Simple Romance [Photo Credit: Columbia]Alt-pop collective COIN delivers a catchy, fresh, and honest record about romance with “Simple Romance,” the buzz single from their forthcoming, 2019 LP.

“Scream until I’m blue / Yeah, I’m losing my edge / The she’s air in my chest / What ya got in your hand?” Fresh, fresh, fresh! Alt-pop band COIN brings the heat on “Simple Romance,” the superb promo single for the collective’s upcoming third studio album, due in 2019.  From a first listen, the magic of the band comprised of Ryan Winnen, Chase Lawrence, Zach Dyke, and Joe Memmel is evident.

There are a number of reasons why “Simple Romance” is nothing short of awesome.  First of all, the single is hella groovy from the onset – the prevalence of rhythm is awesome.  Beyond the groove itself, the overall production is magnificent.  The clarity and crispness of the sound truly stands out. Within the production, there is a nice palette of sounds contributing to the excellence:  electric piano, anchoring, robust bass line, guitars, and of course, those drums.  The cherry on top are the vocals by Chase Lawrence. Nuanced throughout, among his best moments incorporate falsetto, such as the catchy, well-rounded chorus:

“You can try to simplify romance

Reduce it to a touch

But maybe we’re in love

You can try to simplify romance

Call it odd attraction

Pulling like a magnet

(You can try).”

The premise of the record is that romance comes in all shapes and forms – it can’t be simply characterized as being the same in each and every scenario.  The romance that Lawrence sings about on the verses isn’t necessarily your typical mold, which supports the aforementioned assertion.

Final Thoughts

All in all, if you haven’t taken the time to check out COIN, you’re missing out.  “Simple Romance” is an awesome promo single that’s well-rounded in just about every way possible.  The vocals are stellar.  The production is sweet.  Furthermore, the songwriting – the lyrics and the theme – is also on-point.  Weaknesses? Nothing glaring in the least.  Need alt-pop in your life? COIN is your band.
