Childish Gambino, Summertime Magic [Photo Credit: RCA]Following the superb “This is America,” Childish Gambino returns with a ‘Summer Pack’ comprised of “Summertime Magic” and “Feels Like Summer.”

Childish Gambino (aka Donald Glover) is nothing short of a gift.  Is there anything that this talented individual can’t do? That’s rhetorical by the way.  After wowing with “This is America”, one had to wonder, can he do anything to top this? The answer so far is no, but Glover delivers two singles that truly do make a great Summer Pack“Summertime Magic” and “Feels Like Summer.”

“Summertime Magic” is relatively simple. Where “This is America” was deceptively simple yet chocked-full of complexity, “Summertime Magic” truly ‘is what it is.’ The lyrics are simplistic, while the record is more about good, romantic vibes.  Glover delivers smooth, soulful vocals, similar to those that made “Awaken, My Love!” such a stellar album, specifically “Redbone”.  Further amplifying the magic is slick, urban contemporary production work, not to mention catchy pre-chorus and chorus sections.  On the pre-chorus, Glover sings:

“You feel like summertime / You took this heart of mine / You’ll be my valentine / In the summer.”

Beyond the pre-chorus and chorus, in regards to form, there is only one verse.  Again, the modus operandi is simplicity.

Final Thoughts

The key word when describing “Summertime Magic” is… SIMPLE.  There’s nothing bigger or more transcendent than good vibes and romance, and there’s nothing wrong with that. Childish Gambino sells it superbly.
