Nashville-based alt-pop musician Chaz Cardigan ‘brings the heat’ on “S.O.S,” his first new single of 2019.
“Why am I wasting all of this energy / Just relearning what’s elementary?” Good question Spazz Chaz Cardigan, good question. Who is Chaz Cardigan? He’s a Nashville-based alt-pop musician, who grew up outside of Louisville, Kentucky. Quite the musician, he’s a classically trained pianist, and self-taught guitarist, bassist, and drummer. Additionally, he produces. His numerous musical influences include Grammy-winning rapper/producer Kanye West, Icelandic alternative darling Björk, iconic rock musician David Bowie, and iconic jazz musician Sun Ra. Cardigan released “S.O.S” (co-written by Kevin Griffin), [originally] on January 25, 2019. “S.O.S.” is set to appear on his forthcoming EP, vulnerabilia.
“S.O.S.” benefits from its enthusiastic production, featuring prominent use of rhythm guitar. Adding to the enthusiastic sound is a ‘happy’ major key, and compelling vocals from Cardigan himself. One thing that stands out about Cardigan’s vocals and the record itself is the rhythmic nature of the melodic lines. Beyond the capable vocals on the verse, Cardigan serves up a high-flying, memorable chorus which shows off his cutting, upper register vocals. Furthermore, the listeners are given a memorable ‘s-bomb’ to work with
“I wanna get over it And not pull the same old shit But I’ve got a way of getting in my way I wanna get over it.”
Speaking of profanity, the aggressive bridge stands out, thanks to its repeated f-bombs (“I’m gonna fuck it up again / I’m gonna fuck it up again / I’m gonna take the line and deep dive”). Oh, and were the infectious “na na na” lyrics mentioned?
Final Thoughts
All in all, Chaz Cardigan ‘brings the heat’ on “S.O.S.” He checks off all the boxes: respectable vocals, memorable songwriting, and alluring, well-rounded production work. If you’ve yet to check him out (note: he released an album in 2017 entitled), then “S.O.S.” serves as the perfect opportunity.
