Charli XCX, Girls Night Out [Photo Credit: Atlantic UK]Charli XCX brings the 80s vibes on her enjoyable and spirited ‘girl anthem’, “Girls Night Out.”  It’s cliché, but ultimately, worthwhile.

“So, if you’re out with your girls / And if you feel on top of the world / Whoa-ah-ah-ah-oh.”  If Charli XCX isn’t singing about “Boys”, she seems to be singing about girls.  That’s the case with her latest single, “Girls Night Out.” This time, her tune is “no boys, no boys.” Confusing, but whatever.

“Girls Night Out” features slick production – it’s synth-driven, groovy dance-pop.  The record is modern, but draws heavy influence from the past, specifically 80s.  After the intro (“Whoa-ah-ah-ah-oh”), Charli XCX prepares for her weekend girls’ night out on the first verse:

“Put on my favorite lip gloss / Cherry Garcia swirl / Perfume, pleasure, and platforms.”

She follows with the pre-chorus where she gives a shout-out to the girls going on a girls’ night out worldwide.  Yep, that’s about the size of it.  The chorus ends up being cliché and simple, but effective.

“It’s a girls’ night out / Let’s have a girls’ night out tonight… / No boys, no boys …/ It’s a girls’ night out.”

The second verse serves up more clichés, such as “R.I.P. to the club / ‘Cause we walk in and kill it.” Been there, done that. There’s also a breakdown section that reaffirms the boys aren’t allowed. We get the point.

Final Thoughts

Ultimately, “Girls Night Out” is enjoyable, but nothing game changing.  The 80s cues are cool, but again, nothing that hasn’t already been done previously.  Give Charli XCX credit for the attitude and big personality she shows off throughout “Girls Night Out.”
