Once upon a time, CeeLo Green was “kind of a big deal.” He ended up winning a Grammy for his blunt but totally infectious single, “Fuck You” from his 2010 studio album, Lady Killer.  That wasn’t the only bop from Lady Killer, which featured gems like “Fool for You” and the vintage-sounding “Old Fashioned”. Of course, Green was also a judge on NBC’s The Voice.  However, the prodigious R&B artist endured controversy, and honestly, his career just hasn’t rebounded.  He returns with his first album in nearly five years, CeeLo Green is Thomas Calloway (June 26, 2020), led by singles “Lead Me” and “Doing it All Together.”

“Lead Me” perfectly suits CeeLo Green, period.  Why? The script hearkens back to the past, which is where Green’s distinct, soulful pipes best fit.  Producer Dan Auerbach definitely plays a sizable role, helping to fuse gospel, soul, and all things ‘retro’ seamlessly.  CeeLo showcases incredible vocal control and poise on the verses, rising to the occasion on the thoughtful, memorable chorus, ‘bringing it on home.’

“Lead me, by example
Lead me, ‘cause I’ve been goin’ nowhere
Lead me, to the promise land
I’ll follow you through fire
You’re more than a friend.”

In addition to the style and approach taken by the artist, that script includes a backdrop with soul instrumentation (keyboards, organ, bass, drums).  That instrumentation leads to a very organic, vintage sound.  It further amplified by some sweet background vocals. As aforementioned, the chorus is thoughtful and memorable.  The same can be said about the entirety of the song. Lyrically it’s inspirational and uplifting – just the sentiment Green needs to sell.

Final Thoughts

All in all, “Lead Me” is a superb single by CeeLo Green.  While his controversies can’t be forgotten, a record like this helps to remind everyone why the rapper, singer, and songwriter was so beloved in the first place.  “Lead Me” excels thanks to the soulful vocals, vintage-sounding production, and thoughtful songwriting.
