“Be careful who you hang around; beliefs are sticky things / Stick on your shoes and on your soul, rearrange your dreams.” Country singer/songwriter Cam returns with her second single of 2018, “Road to Happiness.” “Road to Happiness” follows a brilliant cover of the Sam Smith record, “Palace”. Co-writing with Cam on “Road to Happiness” are Hillary Lindsey and Tyler Johnson.

“Road to Happiness” is composed of gentle, understated production work, initially led by acoustic guitar. Traces of steel guitar and piano later add some additional color, but never doing anything too dramatic. Throughout the course of the record, Cam delivers beautiful, pure vocals.  The performance is simple, yet incredibly expressive.  In addition to her commanding and compelling lead, she’s supported by lovely, harmonized backing vocals.  This only amplifies her awesome lead. Unsurprisingly well-written overall, it is the memorable chorus that earns honors as the best part of the song.

“It’s a wild unknown / It’s a ball-and-chain / It’s a no-end destination / We keep drivin’ anyway / Is the future that we’re chasin’ / Worth the right-nows that we miss / On this road to happiness?”

Final Thoughts

“Road to Happiness” becomes a bit freer instrumentally at the end of the record, following Cam’s final vocals.  Still, there’s poise – the musicians never totally lose their cool. All in all, “Road to Happiness” is a pleasant, well-rounded country record.  Cam doesn’t do too little nor too much – she gives just the right amount.
