BTS Debuts at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100: Scanning the Charts 📉 No. 11 [Photo Credits: Bighit Entertainment, Brent Faulkner, The Musical Hype, Pexels, Pixabay]Scanning the Charts – Billboard 200 & Billboard Hot 100 (9/5/20) – BTS makes history,  debuting at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.

SSCANNING THE CHARTS is just what it says it is.  I, the quirky founder and do-it-all at The Musical Hype scans through the Billboard Charts and picks out things that catch my eye.  To reiterate what I said last week (Taylor Swift & Cardi B Remain Tops), this column won’t be extensive, but rather short and sweet, keeping that 💩 moving.  This week, I picked out five notable observations from the Billboard 200, and five observations from the Billboard Hot 100, highlighting BTS who debuts at no. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Check out my takeaways!

Billboard 200

Taylor Swift, folklore [Photo Credit: Taylor Swift]💭 A bit surprising given the number of new releases, Taylor Swift spends her fifth consecutive week atop the Billboard 200 with her eighth studio album,  folklore. The fifth week marks the first week that folklore has moved under 100K units+.  Also, falling in line with previous weeks,   Pop Smoke (Shoot for the Stars Aim for the Moon) and Juice WRLD (Legends Never Die) continue to dominate posthumously at nos. 2 and 3.

💭 As aforementioned, there were no shortage of new albums released beginning Friday, August 21, that ultimately debut on the Billboard 200.  That said, most of those new releases underperform, with only two earning spots in the top 10.  Nas earns the highest debut as King’s Disease debuts at no. 5. The Killers come next at no. 8 with Imploding the Mirage.

💭 Only two more new albums released on 8/21/20 get top-20 love, if you can believe it.  Tim McGraw secures a no. 14 bow with Here on Earth.  In the past, you could’ve guaranteed a new album by the country musician would’ve easily topped or nearly topped the charts.  Blackbear doesn’t do too badly for himself as Everything Means Nothing starts one spot lower at no. 15.  This marks his second highest debut, with only digital druglord performing better (no. 14 in 2017).

💭 The struggle is real for new releases beyond Nas, The Killers, Tim McGraw, and blackbear.  The top-50 welcomes new arrivals courtesy of Bright Eyes (Down in the Weeds, Where the World On…, no. 36), Maluma (Papi Juancho, no. 38), and Mulatto (Queen of Da Souf, no. 44).

💭 For my last thought bubble, I look at the new releases that barely showed up.  They include Lecrae, whose Restoration begins quite underwhelming at no. 69, and Troye Sivan, whose In a Dream (EP) bows one spot lower at no. 70.  This just seems particularly low for both artists, particularly Lecrae who has previously topped the Billboard 200.  Way down south, deep voiced Josh Turner’s Country State of Mind is quite tepid at no. 131 – yikes!

BTS, "Dynamite" [Photo Credit: Bighit Entertainment]💭 Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion see their “WAP” get dethroned (it slips to no. 2 after two weeks at no. 1).  That’s right, BTS makes history and debuts at no. 1 with their first English-only single, “Dynamite”. Pretty cool!

💭 Miley Cyrus debuted at no. 14 last week with “Midnight Sky”. This week, however, the disco pop smash slips to no. 41.

💭 Conan Gray is on the rise as “Heather,” among my personal favorites from his debut album, Kid Krow, ascends from no. 61 to no. 50.

💭 Travis Scott launches at no. 74 with “The Plan”, a song that appears on the soundtrack for the Christopher Nolan film, Tenet.

💭 Columbian heartthrob Maluma had a disappointing start with Papi Juancho on the Billboard 200 but “Hawai” does manage debut on the Hot 100 at no. 79.
