brakence, hypochondriac [📷: Columbia]“How this shit ain’t obvious to you? I’m not even twenty-one.” Damn, 🎙 brakence has no shortage of confidence.  Of course, since recording 🎵 “caffeine” and releasing 💿 hypochondriac (December 2, 2022), the handsome 🤩 and talented Randall Findell has officially turned 21.  The fact that he’s aged does not take away from “caffeine,” where he paints himself as a badass – cocky, confident, trash-talking, etc.  The chorus continues, “My music be the snobbiest, somehow I’m still gon’ get it done / And I ain’t do this for the audience, hold me down, I already won / I know I’m dope as fuck, I guess I’m glowin’ up.” Woo!

Besides a lit chorus, brakence is backed by electrifying production.  The sound is true to the hyperpop/ experimental realm – very different from mainstream pop.  Also, “caffeine” shares some hip-hop sensibilities, yet, can’t be solely characterized as hip-hop. Beyond the chorus, there is no shortage of brakence feeling himself, with no shortage of profanity, mind you.  “It’s all personal / If I fuck with your shit, you better take it personal,” he asserts in the first beat, continuing, “I’m murderin’ any beat you send me ‘cause I’m versatile / But if I ain’t like your shit, then you won’t get a verse at all.” Oh, snap 🫰! So much more could be said about this FIERCE track, but ultimately, 🎵 “caffeine” is best experienced with headphones or speakers as opposed to written commentary.
