On Head ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ 2 Head ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ, we pit at least two musicians singing the same song together, comparing their performances.  Then, after much deliberation, we deliver a verdict of which performance was the best, or at least, subjectively, which performance moved us more.  In the 20th edition of head ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ2 head ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ (2023), ๐ŸŽ™ Bobby Caldwell and ๐ŸŽ™ John Legend contend for the best rendition of ๐ŸŽต โ€œOpen Your Eyes.โ€ So, without further ado, let the Head 2 Head commence!

1. Bobby Caldwell, โ€œOpen Your Eyesโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Cat in the Hat โ€ข ๐Ÿท Big Deal โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 1980

Bobby Caldwell, Cat In The Hat [๐Ÿ“ท: Big Deal]โ€œDarling open your eyes / Let me show you the light / Girl youโ€™ll never find a love thatโ€™s right.โ€โ€ฏโ€ฏSo, how does one best describe a white R&B artist? Why, they are a blue-eyed soul artist, of course.โ€ฏ That is a characterization of the late, great ๐ŸŽ™ Bobby Caldwell, who could flat out sing. Caldwellโ€™s talent spoke for itself. One of his most beautiful songs, the exuberant ๐ŸŽต โ€œOpen Your Eyesโ€, appeared on his 1980 album,โ€ฏ๐Ÿ’ฟ Cat in the Hat.โ€ฏ Clearly the Cat in the Hat outdid himself with his distinct, expressive tenor shining something fierce.โ€ฏ Sadly, โ€œOpen Your Eyes,โ€ penned by Caldwell, ๐ŸŽผ โœ Bruce Malament, and Norman Harris, did not chart ๐Ÿคฏ! Notably, however R&B artists ๐ŸŽ™ John Legend (more on him later) and ๐ŸŽ™ Dwele have covered and reintroduced this underrated gem while ๐ŸŽ™ Common sampled it in his 2000 classic, ๐ŸŽต โ€œThe Lightโ€.โ€ฏโ€ฏ

In the first verse, Caldwell sings, โ€œYouโ€™re still regretting / The love you left, left behind.โ€ He adds, โ€œIโ€™ve seen you go through the changes / Sitting alone each night / Are you expect to find the love / Love thatโ€™s right.โ€ Obviously, heโ€™s going to open her eyes regarding her ambitions because, โ€œYou may never find a love thatโ€™s right.โ€ That said, couldnโ€™t he be the suitor for her? That seems to be what heโ€™s proposing, and honestly, she should indulge: โ€œThere is a light that shines / Special for you and me / You need a look at the other side.โ€โ€ฏ Besides the love-oriented lyrics, the music is to die for.โ€ฏ The piano ostinato is pivotal, the drum groove anchors, and the ripe guitar adds some bite. Ultimately, the brilliance and success of ๐ŸŽต โ€œOpen Your Eyesโ€ all comes down to those incredible pipes by Bobby.

2. John Legend, โ€œOpen Your Eyesโ€

๐Ÿ’ฟ Love in the Future โ€ข ๐Ÿท Getting Out Our Dreams / Columbia โ€ข ๐Ÿ—“ 2013

John Legend, Love in the Future [๐Ÿ“ท: Getting Out Our Dreams / Columbia]โ€œI see you in the lonely place / How can you be so blind?โ€ ๐ŸŽ™ John Legend has written and performed some marvelous originals throughout his career.โ€ฏ That said, the ๐Ÿ† Academy and Grammy Award winner is also skilled a covering songs, particularly more soulful songs.โ€ฏ On his 2013 album, ๐Ÿ’ฟ Love in the Future, Legend puts his own spin on the ๐ŸŽ™ Bobby Caldwell gem, ๐ŸŽต โ€œOpen Your Eyesโ€. While Legend and Caldwell have two totally different voices, both possess ample soulfulness, hence, why this classic is a fit for John.โ€ฏ Legend lets his gritty, robust baritone shine as he serenades about L-O-V-E.โ€ฏโ€ฏ

[๐Ÿ“ท: Antoni Shkraba via Pexels]โ€œOpen Your Eyesโ€ appears as the third track on Love in the Future โ€“ the second full-length.โ€ฏโ€ฏโ€ฏIn this Legendary remake, produced by ๐ŸŽ› Dave Tozer, DJ Camper, Boogz BG, and Kanye West, many of the music cues are preserved.โ€ฏ Such music cues retained include the ostinato piano lines, a marvelous guitar solo (๐ŸŽธ Chris Sholar), and the key change. Melodically, Legend maintains the sanctity of the tune, but also throws in addition nuances, namely his signature runs.โ€ฏ Also, itโ€™s worth noting that Legend slips in some falsetto occasionally, which is sweet. John doesnโ€™t reinvent the wheel on ๐ŸŽต โ€œOpen Your Eyesโ€ but like Dwele years before him, he reintroduces an underrated classic to a new generation of listeners.โ€ฏ

The Verdict ๐Ÿ‘จ๐Ÿฟโ€โš–๏ธ

[๐Ÿ“ท: Pixabay]๐ŸŽ™ Bobby Caldwell or ๐ŸŽ™ John Legend?  Legend successful reintroduced โ€“ or better yet โ€“ introduces a classic to a new generation.  Undoubtedly, his cover of  โ€œOpen Your Eyesโ€ is a highlight from ๐Ÿ’ฟ Love in the Future.  That said, no matter how awesome Legend sings this marvelous joint, it will ALWAYS belong to Bobby Caldwell.  Rest in peace, Bobby!
