I
t’s that time! Time for what? Time to select the best songs of the month! All the songs on 🎧 Awesome Songs: March 2022 were released as singles or as an album track in March 2022, or whereabouts (I reserve the right to make exceptions).Musicians that made our ears perk up in the month of March include 🎙 Camila Cabello, 🎙 Florence + The Machine, 🎙 Omar Apollo, 🎙 Phife Dawg, and 🎙 ROSALÍA among others. among others. So, without further ado, here are those 🎧 Awesome Songs: March 2022!
1. Florence + The Machine, “My Love”
💿 Dance Fever • 🏷 Polydor • 📅 2022
“So, tell me where to put my love
Do I wait for time to do what it does?
I don’t know where to put my love.”
Thematically, Welch references a lack of inspiration (writer’s block) and the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. “I was always able to write my way out / The song always made sense to me,” she sings in the first verse, continuing, “Now I find that when I look down / Every page is empty.” The good news is the inspiration finally materialized with a surefire bang!
2. Omar Apollo, “Killing Me”
💿 Ivory • 🏷 Warner • 🗓 2022
3. Camila Cabello, “Bam Bam” (Ft. Ed Sheeran)
💿 Familia • 🏷 Epic • 🗓 2022
“Así e’ la vida, sí
Yeah, that’s just life, baby
Yeah, love came around and it knocked me down
But I’m back on my feet
Así e’ la vida, sí
Yeah, that’s just life, baby
I was barely standin’, but now I’m dancin’
He’s all over me (Goza)
Ba-da, bam-bam-bam-bam, bam-bam…”
Sheeran arrives for the second verse, sounding great as he sings about moving beyond the storm. Even better is when Cabello and Sheeran join forces, coupled with full instrumentation, including bright, articulated horns. “Bam Bam” = total vibe!
4. Arcade Fire, “The Lightning I, II”
💿 WE • 🏷 Arcade Fire Music • 🗓 2022
“We were born in paradise, beneath a poisoned sky
Under a bad sign, the micro-age of Gemini
And we are still unlearning, tires are burning in the middle of Rodeo Drive
You know that we’ve been beat down and broken, but now we can testify.”
The ending sets up the contrasting 🎵 “The Lightning II”, which is briefer and intentionally faster, though not before the dynamic and powerful outro performed by Buter and 🎙 Régine Chassagne. “I heard the thunder and I feel I’m going under / Jesus Christ was an only son,” Butler sings at the end of the first verse in “The Lightning II.” Arguably, the quicker single of the two is more engaging, even though it’s a mix of pain and optimism. Butler brings an even greater degree of energy, joined by Chassagne in the pre-chorus (“A day, a week, a month, a year / Every second brings me here”) and the awesome chorus (“Waiting on the lightning / … Waiting on the light / What will the light bring?”). Beyond the chorus, Butler brings another ‘thunderous’ verse, asserting at the end, “I was trying to run away, but a voice told me to stay / And put the feeling in a song.” Good advice by my estimations! To reiterate, both 🎵 “The Lightning I” and 🎵 “The Lightning II” are totally worthwhile.
5. Coi Leray & Nicki Minaj, “Blick Blick”
🎵 “Blick Blick” • 🏷 Republic • 🗓 2022
“I’m the leader bitches follow, follow, follow
I created this shit, Tyler, Tyler, Tyler
Grab his mic and sing it, fa-la-la-la-la-la.”
Safe to say, “Blick Blick” is a surefire banger. Coi Leray is hard-nosed, tough, and sexed-up while Nicki Minaj is true to self – that needs no further explanation. Fancy sufficiently tickled!
6. 5 Seconds of Summer, “COMPLETE MESS”
🎵 “COMPLETE MESS” • 🏷 5SOS, LLC / BMG Rights Management (US) LLC • 🗓 2022
Again, “COMPLETE MESS” is anything but a complete mess. It was penned by quartet solely with Clifford serving as producer. Even if 5SOS are no longer signed to a major label, the quality remains strong 💪. Notably, the beginning of “COMPLETE MESS” bears similarities to past songs. This love-driven cut is groovy and well-executed. The chorus is #winning for sure! The Aussie band remains on the up-and-up.

11. Lucky Daye, “Fuckin’ Sound”
💿 Candydrip • 🏷 Keep Cool / RCA • 🗓 2022
“I don’t care ‘bout who’s around, I just wanna lay you down
I just want you here right now, I just wanna lay you down
Hear you make that fuckin’ sound
‘Til you make that fuckin’ sound.”
Honestly, there’s no need to overthink this one, right? Daye is willing to have sex with her any and everywhere, period. I’m totally on board with this steamy standout!
12. Ghost, 🎵 “Darkness at the Heart of my Love”
💿 IMPERA • 🏷 Loma Vista • 📅 2022
13. Joshua Bassett, “Doppelgänger”
🎵 “Doppelgänger” • 🏷 Warner • 🗓 2022
14. Stromae, “Fils de joie”
💿 Multitude • 🏷 Monsaert Label / Universal Music France • 📅 2022
Besides the theme, the music itself is awesome! There’s a superb use of rhythmic strings which adds a classical element, not to mention ample personality. “Fils de joie” is anchored by an awesome beat and groove. Van Haver offers a mix of pitched and un-pitched (rapped) moments, exhibiting great balance. I truly heart the level of drama during the chorus.
