Avril Lavigne, Head Above Water [πŸ“· : Avril Lavigne Music / BMG Rights Management]For the 10th Thankful Song πŸ™πŸŽΆ, we highlight β€œHead Above Water,” where Avril Lavigne is thankful to God for helping her persevere.

β€œAnd I can’t see in the stormy weather / I can’t seem to keep it all together / And I, I can’t swim the ocean like this forever / And I can’t breathe.” πŸŽ™ Avril Lavigne definitely looks to hills, from whence cometh her help. Before we dig into this inspirational standout, let me remind you the premise of Thankful Songs πŸ™πŸŽΆ! On Thankful Songs πŸ™πŸŽΆ, we highlight songs in which the musician (or musicians) show gratitude about something or towards someone. Β This idea came from the fact that in November, here in the United States of America, many Americans celebrate Thanksgiving.Β  So, what better way than to celebrate than select some awesome songs that exhibit gratitude? Our 10th entry comes from Lavigne with 🎡 β€œHead Above Water”, from her 2019 comeback album, πŸ’Ώ Head Above Water.

Avril Lavigne shines on the title track and album opener, β€œHead Above Water”. On this powerful ballad that dips into CCM and religious music, Lavigne is thankful for surviving a scare with Lyme Disease. Faith is key on this inspirational record. Β On the first verse, she references being safe – surviving and weathering the storm. The second verse, shorter than the first, remains meaningful and thoughtful: β€œCome dry me off and hold me close / I need you now, I need you most.” On the bridge (excerpted at the top), she continues to confirm her fight to live despite adversity. She delivers powerful vocals on the chorus, summarizing the deep emotions she’s been experiencing and petitioning God to help her persevere through.

β€œGod, keep my head above water
Don’t let me drown, it gets harder
I’ll meet you there at the altar
As I fall down to my knees
Don’t let me drown, drown, drown
Don’t let me, don’t let me, don’t let me drown.”
