The vibes, the vibes, those Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ! Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ is a column that celebrates awesome songs from the past.ย  The records that grace this column are older, but that doesnโ€™t necessarily mean theyโ€™re ancient โ€“ no fossils ๐Ÿฆด! All genres of music are welcome. In the 75th edition of Throwback Vibez ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐ŸŽถ (2024), we recollect and reflect on, โ€œUntil You Come Back to Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)โ€ performed by Aretha Franklin.

Aretha Franklin, Let Me In Your Life [๐Ÿ“ท: Atlantic]โ€œThough you donโ€™t call anymore / I sit and wait in vain,โ€ Aretha Franklin sings in the first verse of her soul classic, โ€œUntil You Come Back to Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)โ€. She continues, persistently, โ€œI guess Iโ€™ll rap on your door (Your door) / Tap on your window pane (Tap on your window pane).โ€ In other words, man, sheโ€™s going to make you come back to her, PERIOD! This love song is the fifth track on her 1974 LP, Let Me In Your Life. The songwriting is sublime, thanks to the pen of Clarence Paul, Morris Broadnax, and โ€“ wait for it โ€“ the one-and-only Stevie Wonder! โ€œUntil You Come Back to Meโ€ IS a Stevie Wonder cover. ย It reached no. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1974 after debuting on the charts in 1973. Franklin, Arif Mardin, and Jerry Wexler produced this 1970s pop-soul gem.

All aspects of โ€œUntil You Come Back to Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)โ€ make it a showstopper.ย  The relatable songwriting goes a long way.ย  The relationship has expired, yet, the love hasnโ€™t โ€“ at least from one personโ€™s perspective.ย  โ€œIโ€™m going to swallow my pride (My pride) / Iโ€™m going to beg you to please, baby please see me (Baby won’t you see me?)โ€ Franklin and her awesome background vocalists proclaim in the second verse.ย  Her dynamic lead vocals are the biggest draw of โ€œUntil You Come Back to Meโ€ โ€“ no surprise.ย  Sheโ€™s commanding, expressive, nuanced, and playful with her vocal performance. Call it what it is, a masterclass.ย  But, also, the instrumental โ€“ the musical accompaniment โ€“ is the catโ€™s meow too! The palette is smooth and soulful, idiomatic of the 70s.ย  The bass line is robust and the groove cooks. One of the finest features is the flute soloing by Joe Farrell.ย  All told, โ€œUntil You Come Back to Me (That’s What I’m Gonna Do)โ€ is EVERYTHING.ย  This is one of the best songs in the Aretha Franklin catalog.
