Be prepared to #SLAY! LGBTQ Bopz ๐๐ถ embraces, highlights, and celebrates singles and tracks by LGBTQIA musicians or allies.ย In this column, we provide background and insight into the respective musician(s), as well as analyze + go gaga over the decadent bops being served up.ย Furthermore, when the music dictates deeper, more transcendent discussion, we ensure the point is articulated to the fullest.ย All styles of music are welcome while the BOPZ can be classics or brand-spanking new. So, without further ado, in the 28th edition of LGBTQ Bopz ๐๐ถ (2023), we highlight ๐ต โIโll Meet You in the Bathroomโ performed by ๐ Anthony Sprunk.
โBut Iโll meet you in the bathroom / You go first โcause you know how / People love to assumeโฆโย Hmm ๐ค, wonder what happens when two guys meet in a bathroom? Well, unless you are incredibly naรฏve and live under a rock, it shouldnโt be too hard to figure out what ๐ Anthony Sprunk and this particularly guy intend to do on ๐ต โIโll Meet You in the Bathroomโ.ย Clearly, an act of pleasure is going down ๐ ๐ ๐ฆ, one of which Sprunk goes on to sing, โIf the next five minutes / Is the only five minutes / It was worth every minute.โย Basically, experiencing pleasure, even if it is short-lived and essentially, empty and meaningless, is better than nothing. A lot of gay men might say the same, to be honest. BUT there is something more transcendentโฆ
Interestingly, if you dig deeper into the lyrics of โIโll Meet You In The Bathroom,โ sex isnโt the sole takeaway.ย Sure, Anthony and this guy are going to enjoy each otherโs company temporarily, but there appears to be a level of fear.ย The fear of judgment and shame.ย Those are two things experienced by so many members of the LGBTQ+ community, regardless of the letter that best represents them.ย Notably, Sprunk asserts, โI just wanna go out and not worry about / Stupid people with stupid faces and their opinions.โ Basically, he wants to live his truth without being judged.ย Later, both guys mention the shame: โHe said his family would be ashamed / I said, โMine would feel the sameโ / But God knows that I tried / Turned ocean tears to tides / And nothing changed.โ Woo! So much to unpack from a mere trip to the bathroom! By the end, itโs clear that nothing of substance comes of the hookup as Sprunk has more questions than answers: โDid you make it out of Tucson? / Did you get your law degree? / Did you make it to Chicago? / I guess some things Iโll never know.โ All told, ๐ต โIโll Meet You in the Bathroomโ is truly special, superbly capturing the gay ๐ experience.
