Award winning R&B singer & actress Andra Day drops a serious V-I-B-E on her 2021 single, “Phone Dies.”
The profile of 🎙 Andra Day is definitely on the up and up. Day became a 🏆 Golden Globe-winning actress in 2021 for her role as jazz singer 🎙 Billie Holiday in the film The United States vs. Billie Holiday. Oh, and I failed to mention she’s nominated for an 🏆 Academy Award for the same role! Of course, the first claim to fame for Day isn’t her acting chops but rather her singing chops. She shined on the soundtrack to the film, as well as her debut album, 💿 Cheers to the Fall released way back in 2015. Now, it seems that Day is preparing to release new original music again – yay! Exhibit A: 🎵 “Phone Dies”.
“Phone Dies” was written by a team including Day and 🎼✍ Anderson .Paak with Paak also producing the four-minute, somewhat non-traditional R&B joint. Notably, the record mixes jazz, neo-soul, and old-school sensibilities, creating something that sounds both classic and fresh in 2021. As always, Day shines vocally, blessing the record with her distinct, expressive, and incredibly nuanced pipes. Take one listen and “Phone Dies” is a V-I-B-E. A prime example is the intro and eventual post-chorus: “Wozah, wozah / Gah doong be gee leh.” Of course, the best example of the vibe is the chorus, which is very love centric, chill, and sexy without being sexual:
“This might sound crazy But be my baby I’ll let you feel these vibes until my phone dies Yeah, we can feel these vibes until my phone dies.”
Part of the reason “Phone Dies” is slightly less traditional is the fact that there’s only one verse.
Final Thoughts 💭
Andra Day and her team definitely capture the intended vibe on “Phone Dies.” The sound of the record is ear catching. Day’s vocals are stunning as always. While the writing isn’t insane or transcendent, it’s well-rounded and fits the – wait for it – VIBE. This record is all about that V word, and we ain’t mad at it!
