1. Cardi B, “Outside”

AM I THE DRAMA? » Atlantic Recording Corporation » 2025

Cardi B, AM I THE DRAMA? [📷: Atlantic Recording Corporation]According to the gospel of Cardi B, “Outside niggas love a outside bitch / But be mad when they – get some outside” (*cough, cough – Offset shade). The Grammy-winning rapper dropped “Outside” as a promo single for her long-awaited sophomore album, AM I THE DRAMA?. Cardi is aggressive, hard-nosed, and tough-minded. She gives us a well-rounded cadence and flow. She gets a lift from the malicious-sounding, minor-key instrumental.  There are lots of cooks in the kitchen, aka songwriters.  HeyMicki, Charlie Heat, and DJ SwanQo, all credited as writers, produced it. The beat makes you nod your head.  While the looped synths are sort of been there, done that, they are still effective. The spare brass moments are a highlight of the backdrop. Cardi B is unapologetic, asserting in the pre-chorus, “Next time you see your mama, tell her how she raised a bitch.” Oh, shit! The chorus that follows is fun, where the rapper is liberated, you might say:

“(I’m goin’ out), on the pop-out (Side), ‘cause it’s hot out

(I’m goin’ out), You was playin’ gamеs (Side), now you on timeout

(I’m goin’ out), Wherе the fine niggas? (Side), I’m tryna find niggas

(Out), I been cuffed up too long (Side), let me remind niggas (Yeah).”

Woo! The verses yield some memorable lines whether its, “I like my niggas black and country, that’s just what it is / I can tell that he excited ‘cause he go from small to big,” or, “Booty cheeks gotta shake, flirty niggas got some pape’ / Let me know the time and place, I’m just tryna ride his face.” Da-yum, Cardi! All in all, “Outside” is an entertaining rap banger.

2. The Weeknd, “Open Hearts”

The Weeknd, Hurry Up Tomorrow [📷: The Weeknd XO Music ULC / Republic]

“Falling, falling in love / It’s never easy falling in love again.”
Let that set in. After you have been hurt and experienced heartbreak, it is difficult to fall in love again. What if you get hurt all over again, taking the bait of the possibility of L-O-V-E, when it’s faux? On “Open Hearts”, The Weeknd (Abel Tesfaye) expresses his concerns, citing various reasons.  “All the silver and gold only made my skin cold,” he sings in the first verse, referencing that the material benefits from being a worldwide superstar aren’t the end-all, be-all. In the second verse, he’s “Trapped inside a limbo, watching through a window of my soul.” Damn, bro! But, “Suffering, I’ve been low, then I seen your halo.” Love, despite being risky, appears to be his savior on the gem from his 2025 album, Hurry Up Tomorrow.

Tesfaye, Max Martin, and Oscar Holter penned and produced “Open Hearts.” “Hearts” features sleek, quintessential synthpop production.  The backdrop electrifies with driving, rhythmic synths. The pads and synths produced by the keys are among the most striking sounds of the song, but don’t discount those strings! As always, The Weeknd, despite the issues he sings about, impresses with his smooth, pure tenor vocals.  He exceptionally brings the melodies to life, which are tuneful from start to finish.  The crowning achievement should come as no surprise: the chorus. “Where do I start / When I open my heart? / It’s never easy falling in love again,” he sings, continuing, “Cover my scars / When I open my arms / It’s never easy falling in love again.” Ultimately, “Open Hearts” is one of the most engaging and relatable moments from Hurry Up Tomorrow.

3. cupcaKke, “One of My Bedbugs Ate My Pussy”

“One of My Bedbugs Ate My Pussy” » cupcakKe » 2025

cupcakKe, One of My Bedbugs Ate My Pussy [📷: cupcakKe]

“One of my bedbugs ate my pussy / And he left bed crumbs, your nigga in my bed buggin’ me for the gushy.”
Only cupcakKe, among the most unapologetic rappers of them all, could come up with the likes of “One of My Bedbugs Ate My Pussy”. It is a song title that NO ONE is sure to forget.  She continues rapping in the intro of this filthy, sexed-up, raunch-fest, “Riddles, ain’t that fun but I got a riddle, how my twat really looks tea (Yeah) / What’s sweet, pretty warm, needs water to form and stays with a bag? My pussy (Mwah).” Holy fucking moly! CupcakKe wrote “Bedbugs” while Level On the Beat produced it. It features an aggressive, danceable backdrop set in a minor key.  The beat goes hard, groovy to the nth degree. CupcakKe matches the accompaniment with fierce, hard-nosed, and unapologetic rhymes.

CupcakKe’s one-liners are insane and often X-rated. In the first verse, she spits, “Anal, start pokin’, back throwin’, croc shoes, gotta knock my holes in / Pussy turn poet, start speakin’ when smokin’.” She, indeed, references anal sex, and it’s not the only time 😳. Another memorable moment is comparing a missed facial to a misfired bullet: “Wanna bust on my face, I’ma dodge that cock / He gonna miss this face like when Trump got shot.” In the second verse, she memorably concludes, “Yeah, the pussy got his babies, but the mouth gon’ adopt it.” Holy shit, I’m running out of profanity-laden phrases to describe this profanity-laden, X-rated song 😬. More of the same in the third: “He came in dapper just to eat the butt / The pussy O-P, yo, come pee in the cup.” CupcakKe is filthy, but the cadence and flow are popping! Potent. Beyond the verses, cupcakKe never fails to surprise in other sections.  The chorus is infectious but naughty, referencing Lady Gaga’s shoes, ten-inch dicks, and those bugs, again. In the post-chorus, we get the honor of hearing “Hawk tuah.” In the bridge, she corrupts a child’s nursery rhyme: “The itsy-bitsy spider crawled in my booty crack /… Down came the rain when I threw this coochie back.” One this is for sure, “One of My Bedbugs Ate My Pussy” successfully promotes butt play…

4. Alex Warren, “Ordinary”

You’ll Be Alright, Kid » Atlantic Recording Corporation » 2025

Alex Warren, You’ll Be Alright, Kid [📷: Atlantic Recording Corporation]In case you didn’t know, “You’re takin’ me out of the ordinary / I want you layin’ me down ‘til we’re dead and buried.” Ooh-wee!  Breakout pop singer/songwriter Alex Warren released a dominant hit in 2025 – an understatement. “Ordinary” was inescapable. Ubiquitous! The Warren, Adam Yaron, CAL, and Mags Duval-penned song spent 10 weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Earning double-digit weeks on the pop charts is elite. As of June 2025, “Ordinary” proved its extraordinary nature, earning platinum certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.

So, what else makes “Ordinary” extraordinary? It’s an enjoyable, well-rounded pop song. There are more striking records, but “Ordinary” is respectable. The plucked ostinato at the beginning sets the tone.  It recurs throughout the record. Alex Warren impresses with his warm vocals.  He sings with a beautiful tone, bringing the tuneful melody to life. “So, if our time is runnin’ out,” Warren sings, “Day after day / We’ll make the mundane our masterpiece.” During the pre-chorus, there is the welcome addition of dramatic left-hand piano (“Oh, my, my / Oh, my, my love / I’ll take one look at you”). Of course, the section to beat is the gargantuan chorus.  Mammoth drums, keys, and layered vocals fuel Warren’s fire.

“Somethin’ so out of the ordinary

I want you laying me down ‘til we’re dead and buried

On the edge of your knife, stayin’ drunk on your vine

The angels up in the clouds are jealous knowin’ we found

Somethin’ so out (Out) of the ordinary

You got me kissing the ground (Ground) of your sanctuary (Sanctuary)

Shatter me with your touch, oh, Lord, return me to dust

The angels up in the clouds are jealous knowin’ we found.”

During the second verse, Warren ascends the octave, upping the ante.  Additionally, he digs in more during the second iteration of the chorus. Beyond the chorus, the bridge is big and picturesque: “Somethin’ so heavenly, higher than ecstasy.” Ooh-la-la! Warren brings things down during the final chorus before rising to the occasion one final time.  Although I was less enthusiastic about “Ordinary” during its dominant run, I acknowledge it is more than an ordinary pop song.  It is among 2025’s biggest pop bops, period.

5. Allie X, “Off With Her Tits”

Girl With No Face » Twin Music Inc » 2024

Allie X, Girl With No Face [📷: Twin Music Inc]

“My body is a prison / But how can I escape?”
Haven’t we all asked that question regarding some part of our anatomy at some point? LGBTQ+ allies can deliver bops that make the listener beam with pride, too. Canadian singer/songwriter Allie X (Alexandra Hughes) is a staunch ally of the LGBTQ+ community, and in 2024, she delivered one of the year’s most thought-provoking songs: “Off With Her Tits”.  The title of the highlight from Girl With No Face is on the nose, but the theme and lyrics are deeper and more transcendent.  “Off With Her Tits” may not be intentionally written for those that identify as trans, for example, but you can see how the lyrics could relate to gender-affirming surgery:

“Then I called the doctor

Said, ‘Miss, what can you do?’

She told me she’d cut them off

I said, ‘Sign me up for June’

I went to the teller

Took out 10K in cash

She said, ‘Bitch, are you joking?

I wish I had that rack’.”

Even from other identities in the community, the body dysmorphia alluded to lyrically connects. Allie X penned and produced this provocative masterpiece.

From the beginning, the body issues plague Allie X, or the character portrayed.  Although her beauty is admired, she’s perturbed (“Stubborn Aphrodite”). In the chorus, she’s clear she desires/prefers being flat-chested (“I’m flat with a wit /… Off with her tits”).  In the second verse, she’s unhappy because her chest has grown larger than she’d like. However, ‘he’ likes the sight, speaking to unwanted objectification.  “He noticed in the show said he liked it, and I cried,” she sings, adding, “Take this flesh and suck it out / And stop the ridicule.” While the songwriting and her desire to “be parallel” is the crowning achievement of “Off With Her Tits,” musically, Allie X is the sugar honey iced tea too.  The dark, gothic-pop instrumental backdrop is fierce, providing ample fuel for her electrifying vocal performance (the groove, the synths, the minor key).  The melodies are ear-catching and tuneful from start to finish.  “Off With Her Tits” is a song that many can relate to for different reasons.

6. Tyler Childers, “Oneida”

Snipe Hunter » RCA » 2025

Tyler Childers, Snipe Hunter [📷: RCA]

“Back when the radio spoke to her heart / Oh girls, they wanna have fun.”
Indeed, they do, Tyler Childers. The Grammy-nominated Kentucky-born and bred country artist returns with another top-notch song, “Oneida”, which appears on his 2025 album, Snipe Hunter.  Childers wrote “Oneida” while Rick Rubin, one of the best in the game, across multiple genres, produced it.

“Oneida, I know that I’m younger than most

But I’m willing if you’ve got the time

To buy us some wine.”

From the beginning, Tyler Childers is on autopilot.  The songwriting is spot-on from the thoughtful, narrative approach to the endearing, engaging, and tuneful chorus excerpted above. Not only are the lyrics delightful, but so are Childers’ vocals.  He delivers a commanding, dynamic, nuanced, and powerful vocal performance. His tone is elite. Adding to the excellence is the sound of the record – the marvelous accompaniment.  Things begin simply with an acoustic guitar.  Gradually, the instrumental builds up, adding bass, piano, steel guitar, accordion, fiddle, and last but not least, drums.  During the marvelous instrumental section following the second chorus and preceding the third and final verse, Jesse Wells delivers a sweet fiddle solo.  With “Oneida”, Childers continues to prove that he is not only one of the Bluegrass state’s finest country musicians but also among the elite in the genre. This song checks off all the boxes, delivering a truly authentic brand of country music.

7. Teyana Taylor, “Open Invite” (Ft. KAYTRANADA)

Escape Room » Taylormade Enterprises, Inc. / Def Jam Recordings » 2025

“I could ride it / And tell me that you want it / Don’t be shy with me.”
Oh, snap, Teyana Taylor! Collaborating with Grammy-winning DJ/producer KAYTRANADA, Taylor drops a sensually charged song in “Open Invite”. “Open Invite” is the 13th track from her long-awaited 2025 album, Escape Room. Although brief, running under two minutes, this invitation is potent. Taylor, KAYTRANADA, and Carrington Brown produced it. Notably, it samples multiple elements from the 1997 song, “Beep Me 911” by Missy Elliott featuring 702 and Magoo.  The sound is chill, enigmatic, and sexy, matching the warm vocals of Taylor.  With those vocals, she serves up titillating lyrics.

Despite its brevity, “Open Invite” features a standard form.  There are two verses, each of which is followed by a brief pre-chorus and the chorus.  “Keep your thoughts aside,” Taylor urges in the first verse, and adds, “Put it on the floor tonight if you don’t mind.” Noted! In the second, she’s honest regarding her desires: “Oh, I just wanna fuck all night / You know this pretty pussy real tight.” D-d-damn! It doesn’t end there as she adds, “Let me put that stick in drive / Shift and let a real bitch ride…”  The centerpiece of “Open Invite” is the chorus.  Frankly, Teyana wants to get down to business – no small talk necessary!

“Wanna put it on the floor tonight

This is an open invite

To come inside and get this, get right.”

The transparency of “Open Invite” is undisputed.  Sex-positivity is all the rage and Teyana Taylor and KAYTRANADA deliver a short but sweet and sexy joint.

8. Alex Warren & ROSÉ, “On My Mind”

You’ll Be Alright, Kid » Atlantic Recording Corporation » 2025

Alex Warren, You’ll Be Alright, Kid [📷: Atlantic Recording Corporation]

“Maybe it’s the way the clouds are painted / A perfect shade of yellow all across the sky.”
It is his time. Alex Warren is experiencing a breakthrough year in 2025. Continuing to build on his success, Warren collaborates with K-pop standout ROSÉ (Roseanne Park) in the single, “On My Mind”. “On My Mind” is the 11th track from his debut album, You’ll Be Alright, Kid. Warren co-wrote with many songwriters, including producers Ammo and John Ryan.

Warren draws first blood, performing the first verse, chorus, and post-chorus. “Hidden underneath the floor / In the attic of my dreams there’s somebody I adore,” he proclaims in the first verse.  The chorus, excerpted earlier, is the centerpiece, with Alex continuing, singing, “Maybe it’s the way the times are changin’ / And I’m stuck in the middle, frozen in a fire / But, baby, you’re on my mind.” ROSÉ enters the fray in the second verse.  Interestingly, she takes the opposite approach: “In the basement of my dreams there’s somebody I ignore / Yeah, I’m a fool, don’t be surprised / I don’t ever think about you at all.” Ooh-wee! She sings alongside Warren in the second chorus. Likewise, they join forces on the bridge (“You showed up, gracefully and casually / Our love was what it had to be”). For the first time, ROSÉ sings with Alex in the final post-chorus, with the duo concluding “On My Mind” with the sung phrase, “Baby, you’re on my mind.” Ultimately, “On My Mind” is an entertaining, well-rounded duet between two talented artists.  Both sing well.  Alex has a powerful instrument in his hands, while ROSÉ sings angelically.  The melodies are tuneful, the songwriting memorable, and the sound is, fittingly, sound.  It’s not game-changing, but it is well-rounded all in all.

9. Megan Thee Stallion, “Otaku Hot Girl”

MEGAN: ACT II » Hot Girl Productions LLC » 2024

“I like a tall woman with a nice big ass (Haha) / Just sayin’ / Like Grammy winner Megan Thee Stallion.”
Ooh-wee! What more can you say to that? Following a brutally honest, ass-driven intro, Megan Thee Stallion comes in hot on “Otaku Hot Girl”. She raps in the chorus, the centerpiece, “Ayy, can’t touch me like Gojo / Look good in all my photos / Just landed in Kyoto / I’m worldwide, these bitches local / Arigato / Arigato.” It’s giving a heaping dose of Anime!  “Otaku Hot Girl” is the 20th track from MEGAN: ACT II. Bankroll Got It produced “Otaku Hot Girl,” which thrives on a banging beat, colorful keys, synths, and timely left-hand piano (those bass notes, baby).

As always, Megan Thee Stallion is fierce on “Otaku Hot Girl.” She wows with her compelling, fast-paced cadence and flow. Beyond the infectious chorus, Thee Stallion eats in the verses. “Niggas bow down when I pop out like Sakuna / Eatin’ these rap bitches, that get me booted up,” she asserts in the first verse, and continues, “Switchin’ my flow up, it feel like it’s two of us / If I let Tina [Snow] out, that’s a coup de grâce.” Oh, snap! Tina Snow reappears near the end of the first verse, where Thee Stallion confirms, “Everybody know Tina Snow is the mack.” The second verse is a sight to behold as well: “I’m the sensei or the senpai, the one hoes wanna be just like /Ass still on Texas, but my waist in a European size.” And, for good measure, Megan states, “Hoes want my technique, couldn’t be like me with a Sasuke sharingan.” Even as Megan Thee Stallion nerds out with Anime references, “Otaku Hot Girl” is another badass rap banger from her catalog.

10. mgk, “Orpheus”

Lost Americana » EST 19XX, LLC / Interscope » 2025

mgk, lost americana [📷: EST 19XX, LLC / Interscope]

“Somewhere in a different realm, we’re still together / Somehow, I’ll find my way to you again.”
Uh-oh, it’s giving tragic loss… Let those deep, emotional lyrics from mgk (Colson Baker) sink in.  Those love/relationship-oriented lines hail from “Orpheus”, the 13th and final track from his seventh studio album, Lost Americana (2025).   The second-longest song from Lost Americana, it runs over four and a half minutes.  Notably, he penned “Orpheus” with his ex, actress Megan Fox. BazeXX, Dark Waves, No Love For The Middle Child, and SlimXX produced it.

Expectedly, “Orpheus” references mythological figures Orpheus and his wife, Eurydice. After Eurydice tragically dies (“Eurydice died from a viper”), Orpheus is filled with grief (“The girl Orpheus knew he’d die for”).  He makes a trip to the underworld and, through his gift of music, convinces Hades to let Eurydice return to Earth.  All he has to do is have Eurydice walk behind him and not look back.  Easier said than done, as Orpheus, paranoid, looks back and loses Eurydice again, forever.  Paralleled in the first verse, mgk asserts, “‘Cause life’s just death if I don’t have you / So I’ll find Hell to be trapped into.” Like Orpheus, mgk wants “To get back to you,” specifically, Megan Fox. In the second verse, beyond the lyric excerpted at the top, he adds, “And gravity’s pull was never stronger / Than my soul’s cord attached to you / I’m lost, but my heart’s got the map to you.”  The centerpiece is the chorus, where Orpheus, I mean, mgk, desires to hold her once more – “Feel your heartbeat ‘til it fades / And in this moment, it’s me and you only / I will love you for all my days.” Sandwiched between instrumental moments, including a striking piano-led outro by Jon Batiste, is the bridge, where mgk continues to reflect upon love, stating, “I won’t let you love me, but I can’t let you leave me / It’s a tragedy, and we’ve all seen that scene.” Ultimately, mgk sings authentically, beautifully, and sincerely on this pop ballad. “Orpheus” caps off the critically maligned album in a heartfelt manner.

11. Lil Tecca, “OWA OWA”

DOPAMINE » Republic » 2025

Lil Tecca, DOPAMINE [📷: Republic]

“I hit it from the back and now she sayin’ / (Owa-owa).”
Say what, now, Lil Tecca (Tyler-Justin Anthony Sharpe)?! The rapper touts his sexual skills on the brief, “OWA OWA”, the second track from his 2025 album, DOPAMINE. Judging by these lyrics, he’s awesome in the sack. “OWA OWA” is not all sex; Tecca does more than just hit it from the back. There’s drip, too, with the likes of “New Chrome, yeah, I got that shit on my hip,” and, “Leather seats all in this truck.” As we know, leather seats are only available on premium trimlines – they cost ya! Speaking of cost, the rapper mentions it at the end of the sole verse:  “Look through my records, say that’ll cost ya / It’s a long time tryna get to Waukesha.” Where? Waukesha, Wisconsin. Random…

So, does Lil Tecca say much throughout “OWA OWA”? Nope. Notably, it samples the 1979, beloved one-hit wonder by The Buggles, “Video Killed the Radio Star”. If that sample sounds familiar, Nicki Minaj also sampled the classic in her 2010 song, “Check It Out” (with will.i.am).  That, my friends, is where the “owa-owa” lyrics come from.  Even though Lil Tecca isn’t profound (“Bad romance, shawty like Lady Gaga / She want a pop star, rock star”), his cadence and melodic flow are a pro. “OWA OWA” is a vibe, with solid production from Rio Leyva and Taz Taylor, who are integrating the elements of the sample and anchoring the song with a hard-hitting beat.

12. Katy Perry, “OK”

1432 » Capitol » 2024

Katy Perry, 1432 [📷: Capitol]

“Hey, it’s gonna be okay / I’m always gonna be around / No matter if you’re up or down.”
Good to know… I think! Following a disastrous album cycle with 143, Grammy-nominated pop artist Katy Perry released a deluxe version, titled 1432. There is one thing working in Perry’s favor, however.  “OK”, the 15th track from the deluxe is… okay.  Like many pop songs, “OK” has a lots of songwriters (eight), and is produced by Dr. Luke and Vaughn Oliver. The chorus, the first section heard in “OK,” is tuneful.  She continues singing, “Hey, what did I say? / I’m never gonna let you drown / No matter if you’re up or down.” Is the writing the most poetic? No, but Perry makes her point loud and clear.  In the verses, matters of the heart lead through thick and thin.  “Let’s make a toast to / Everything we’ve been through,” she sings in the first verse, adding, “‘Cause I don’t always like you / But I’m always gonna love you.” Similarly, in the second, she sings, “If we just keep goin’ / The road is gonna open.” Vocally, Perry sings well – no qualms there.  The production separates itself from other songs, which is a positive. Ultimately, the groove, prominent bass line, and guitars are pleasant.  Again, “OK” is okay.

13. Ed Sheeran, “Old Phone”

Play » Warner Music UK Limited / Ed Sheeran Limited » 2025

Ed Sheeran, Play [📷: Warner Music UK Limited / Ed Sheeran Limited]

“I found my old phone today / In a box that I had hidden away.” And what happened, Ed Sheeran? “Nostalgia tryin’ to lead me astray / Maybe, I’ll unwrite some songs.”
“Old Phone” marks the second single from the Grammy-winning singer/songwriter’s 2025 album, Play. Sheeran penned “Old Phone.” He produced it with Blake Slatkin and ILYA.

“Old Phone” has ample pros. Sheeran delivers clear, radiant vocals. The folk-pop, singer/songwriter vibes are fitting for him. Sure, the initial rhythmic guitar accompaniment is nothing brand-new, but it is respectable. Additional instrumentation arrives by the chorus, with the second verse featuring full instrumentation.  The melodies are tuneful while the lyrics are nostalgic and thoughtful. “The ones who love me, I just them away,” Sheeran sings in the second verse, continuing, “Couldn’t tell the difference from the leeches.” Ah, the plight of fame! The section to beat, unsurprisingly, is the chorus in all of its glory:

“Conversations with my dead friends

Messages from all my exes

I kinda think that this was best left

There in the past where it belongs.”

So, what does Ed do with that “Old Phone”?  “I put it back inside there from whence it came.” Great idea! As for the song, this is a relatable winner.  No, not all of us are famous like Sheeran, but we all have a past that we have tried to move beyond.

14. Troye Sivan, “One Of Your Girls”

Something To Give Each Other » Universal Music Australia Pty Ltd. » 2023

Troye Sivan, Something To Give Each Other [📷: EMI Recorded Music Australia Production]“One Of Your Girls” caught everyone’s attention as the third single from Something To Give Each Other, coinciding with the album’s release.  The music video garnered plenty of attention, with its eye candy, namely a shirtless Ross Lynch with his jeans unbuttoned 🥵 😍.  But there’s even more fierceness: Troye Sivan in drag. Oh, snap!  The visuals are stunning, but so is the song too. Sivan gives us cool, expressive vocals. Melodically, this Sivan, OZGO (Oscar Görres), and Leland composition is tuneful, particularly the chorus.  “Give me a call if you ever get lonely / I’ll be like one of your girls or your homies,” Sivan sings, continuing, “Say what you want, and I’ll keep a secret.” Ah, a discreet arrangement! Sexuality is complex, and “One Of Your Girls” does a masterful job of showing such a complex scenario.

“You wanted something to save, you wanted something to tame / You wanted me to come running when you called my name.”
Oh, snap, Gavin Adcock! The country singer adds in the first verse of “Outside Dog”, “Ever since you laid eyes on me / You’ve been barking up the wrong damn tree.” So, to be clear, we’re not actually talking about a dog, are we? “Outside Dog” is the second track from Adcock’s 2025 album, Own Worst Enemy. Chase McGill, Josh Thompson, and Matt Dragstrem penned this dog-driven joint. Jay Rogers produced it. A strong vocal performance, memorable lyrics, tuneful melodies, and a countrified sound make “Outside Dog” an engaging listening experience.

In the first verse, Gavin Adcock sets the tone.  This girl wanted to change and control him. He wasn’t having it! Continuing the dog references, in the second verse, Adcock asserts, “I’m born to howl at the moon, you know I need me some room / For chasing me all night and then sleeping ‘till noon / Gonna do what I do girl.”  This dog, rather, man, can’t be tamed!  In the centerpiece, the chorus, he makes it clear she’ll be disappointed with him.

“Girl, I don’t guess I can blame you for trying

To fence me in, but that’s your fault

Hell, you brought in this outside dog

This outside dog.”

Woo! Ultimately, Gavin Adcock shines, embracing his rough-around-the-edges persona on “Outside Dog”.  He sings expressively, showing off the country twang loud and proud.  This dog owner must understand what she’s getting herself into 😜!

“I look like sex.”
Ooh-wee, Kid Souf! That’s surefire confidence 🥵! “If I lick it, then I own it,” he sings, adding, “If I kiss it, I control it / I been kissin’ on your body all night.” Oh, snap! Kid Souf flaunts his sex appeal and sex-positivity on the bold, unapologetic single “On Your Face”.  Not only does it feature suggestive lyrics, but the cover art features Souf’s name written on his face with jizz 💦, as well as a music video with simulated sex (oral and anal) and blasphemy 😈! There’s no doubt about “On Your Face” – it’s all about pleasure, baby!

“I wanna touch on my own body ‘cause my body’s the goal.”
Damn, that’s a strong statement there, Kid Souf! He makes numerous eyebrow-raising assertions. “So, blow me while I blow this money right up my nose” references a BJ and drug use 😳.  He doesn’t stop there, either! “Give you something good tonight / Light you up like camera lights / Down your throat until it’s numb…” Size matters! If we are to believe what he implies, he is well-endowed 🍆… Further exploring the outlandish lyrics, Souf adds, “Wanna  hear you scream / Wanna feel your body shake / Wanna hear you speak in tongues / I don’t wanna know your name / Just give me the word / And I’ll write it on your face.” Let’s unpack that.  He enjoys moaning, the ‘motion of the body’ during sex, he doesn’t care about his partner’s name and will willingly ejaculate on his face.  Holy fuck! “On Your Face” is nothing short of a trip! Kid Souf brings ample attitude, the lyrics are infectious and suggestive, while the musical backdrop, with its dynamic, danceable synths and beat, goes hard.  It’s not explicit with curse words, but still, it’s not safe for work!

17. Mad Tsai, “One Of The Boys”

“One Of The Boys” » Mad Tsai » 2025

“Sweat dripping on my lips / Good god, you’re so masculine,”
the smoking hot and talented Mad Tsai sings in “One Of The Boys”.  He continues in the first verse, “Hate to say but I love it / You got me going when we’re wrestling.” Tsai penned this boy-centric pop joint with Maria Landi, and producer, Tele Fresco.  One of the big takeaways from this is how he highlights masculinity. The bisexual pop artist hates to admit he enjoys their more heteronormative interactions.  He’s not wrong when he adds, “We can talk about girls,” but Tsai sees more potential for them. In the tuneful, simplistic chorus, he sings:

“I’m just one of the boys

Boys, boys, boys, boys

You can make me your toy

Toy, toy, toy, toy

Baby you can just close your eyes and enjoy

I’m just one of the boys

Boys, boys, boys, boys, boys.”

Other masculine things include watching ballgames, frat house shenanigans, and working out. Notably, there is great talk-singing during the bridge. Here, Tsai showcases ample personality (“Baby slick your hair back / No shirt with my baseball bat / Boy if I pitch, can you catch?”). Beyond the entertaining lyrics, “One Of The Boys” thrives off its modern pop sound: groove, synths, guitar, etc. Another selling point outside of the music is the sexy cover art.  Mad Tsai showing off the midriff will never not be sexy! “One Of The Boys” = another winning pop bop from Mad Tsai!

18. John Conlin, “On Repeat”

“On Repeat” » John Conlin » 2024

John Conlin, On Repeat [📷: John Conlin]A beautiful, talented human hails from Toronto, Canada.  That would be pop singer/songwriter John Conlin. “On Repeat” marks the fourth single Conlin released in 2024. Once again, he ‘brings the heat’ with his pen and performance.  He produced “On Repeat” alongside Jamesfromtheinternet.  The musical accompaniment is sensational, led by rhythmic piano, guitar, and a banging drum groove.  The well-rounded production is tailor-made for Conlin’s boyish pipes. John’s radiant vocals are one of the biggest selling points of “On Repeat.” The Canadian sings with ease, never breaking a sweat. He sings smoothly; his upper register is sugar honey iced tea. Even when he adds ad-libs, he never does ‘too much’—it’s just right.  The melodies are memorable and tuneful from start to finish.  The centerpiece is the chorus, as to be expected: “I can imagine you and me / Dancing around ‘til 83 / I will be waiting on your street / Playing the song on r-r-repeat. Other notes about “On Repeat.” The songwriting is satisfying (“Baby, just look in my wide eyes / I’ll be waiting for the right time / If you need a second or two… / That’s alright”). Also, the form is well organized and easy to follow (verse, pre-chorus, chorus, bridge, etc.).  John Conlin delivers the goods “On Repeat”, a song that is incredibly easy to play on r-r-repeat!

19. Jay-Z, Kanye West & Otis Redding, “Otis”

Jay-Z & Kanye West, Watch The Throne [📷: Roc-A-Fella Records, LLC / Shawn Carter]What happens when Jay-Z, Kanye West, and Otis Redding (1941 – 1967) join forces? Magic, and the song, “Otis”, of course! “Otis” is the fourth track from Jay-Z and Kanye West’s collaborative 2011 album, Watch The Throne. The Throne single peaked at number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 2022, it was certified triple platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.  At the 54th Annual Grammy Awards, “Otis” won the Grammy for Best Rap Performance.  “Otis” features numerous samples, most notably the soul classic, “Try A Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding.  The genius of Kanye West behind the boards is on full display. “Otis” features distinct sounds given the old-school samples.

Otis Redding is featured prominently at the beginning of the song, gassing up Jay-Z and Kanye West (“…Some girls, they don’t forget it / Love is their only happiness”). Jay-Z also appears in the intro, memorably asking the audience, “Sounds so soulful, don’t you agree?” With the tone set, “Otis” amps up quickly. The way that the sample is used throughout is brilliant.  After his appearance in the intro, Jay-Z draws first blood, delivering a compelling cadence and flow. “Uh, I invented swag / Poppin’ bottles, puttin’ supermodels in the cab,” he spits, and continues, “Proof / I guess I got my swagger back, truth.” Uh! Kanye West follows, matching the energy of Hov in the second verse.  “They say I’m crazy, well, I’m ‘bout to go dumb again / They ain’t seen me ‘cause I pulled up in my other Benz,” he asserts, and continues, “Last week, I was in my other, other Benz / Throw your diamonds up ‘cause we in this bitch another ‘gain.”

The way that Jay-Z and Kanye trade verses is awesome. Jay-Z follows in the third verse, continuing to eat the beat up (“Photoshoot fresh, looking like wealth / I’m ’bout to call the paparazzi on myself”). West is on fire, once more, in the fourth verse, bragging, “I made ‘Jesus Walks’,  I’m never going to hell / Couture-level flow is never going on sale / Luxury rap, the Hermès of verses / Sophisticated ignorance, write my curses in cursive.” In the sixth and final verse, Jay and ‘Ye join forces on the phrase, “What more can I say?” “Otis” concludes with a bang, rather, gritty howling/ screaming. It is James Brown’s howl sampled from “Don’t Tell a Lie About Me and I Won’t Tell the Truth on You” (“Scream it / Give it / Scream it”). A rap banger for the ages, Jay-Z and Kanye West kill it on “Otis”.

“Let me sail, let me sail / Let the Orinoco flow…”
Grammy-nominated, Irish New Age musician Enya penned the soothing, 1988 classic, “Orinoco Flow”, alongside Roma Ryan.  It was produced by Nicky Ryan. A top 40 hit, it peaked at number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1989. Parent album, Watermark, peaked at number 25 on the Billboard 200, eventually reaching multiplatinum status. “Sail away, sail away, sail away…” Those are the lyrics that stand out from “Orinoco Flow.” Enya was referring to the📍Orinoco River in 🗺️ South America. It’s not all about the Orinoco River, however.  In the first verse, Enya also has us navigating additional geography: beaching “On the shores of 📍Tripoli [Libya],” and beaching “Far beyond the 📍 Yellow Sea [Western Pacific Ocean].” Additional verses offer an assortment of locations.  Clearly, “Orinoco Flow” is all about location, location, location, and, of course, sailing away! The best way to describe this picturesque, New Age, Celtic folk song is a vibe.
